Do you have the original rubber bits on the front mount or have you replaced them with the aluminum pieces?
Please elaborate on your experience with either.

Michael, here are some photos of my Berg 5 mount.
I have the later version front mount, which uses aluminum blocks. The rear mount incorporates rubber blocks.
This definitely transmits more engine and transaxle noise to the car than the stock tranny and mounts, especially if you use Weddle gears for 3rd and 4th, but now you can pretend you're Hans Herrmann at the Targa Florio.
I originally had rubber. It looked like one was separating a bit so I put in the aluminum blocks. I have probably driven less than 150 miles with the aluminum. I don't like the noise. I am thinking of going back to rubber and just keeping an eye on them.
Is there an urethane option?
Nope. The aluminum option has a bolt through. The rubber option has a bolt coming out each side of the rubber piece, no through bolt. I believe the issue with rubber is that the bolts can separate from the rubber.
I saw one Berg 5 front that someone modified to add a third rubber piece to. That would make them less stressed.
It doesn't take a stock VW mount - like the tough Rhino one?
No. The front mount is hung off the Berg mid-mount. There are two square tubes coming forward from the mid-mount. On the ends of the tubes are either the rubber or aluminum bits. Then there is a plate on the other side of the rubber or aluminum that connects to the attachment points on the pan.
The picture shows the mount for a '73 and later pan.
It is hard to see the rubber pieces but they are between the square tubes and the bent plate.

The berg front rubber mounts with the studs are junk, only use the alum spacers.
