I had one on my IM years ago. When I did the rebuild I went with a stock doghouse shroud (BB 911 shroud melted in the fire).
It doesn't cool any better than a stock shroud, and you will have to install a remote oil cooler and go with a different carb linkage. It also consumes more hp to turn the big fan.
It does look pretty, though.

Jack, I was born and raised in Calif. and in the past 63 years I've never heard of Prather,CA so, I looked it up on Google Earth. WOW, not much there other than a few businesses. Remote to say the least but interesting.

Take it from someone who's worked on VW engines since the 60's. If you're contemplating a Porsche 911 style fan shroud "don't"

If you have room and I suspect you do, go with the DTM as shown above in the post by Scott Slater, or, a stock dog house VW shroud. 911 style shrouds look cool but in reality they run hot.
Thanks for each of your inputs ~

I've done as much as I believe I can to improve my Type 1 Cooling utlilizing the OEM components:
Dog House Fan Shroud
Auxillary 96 Plate Oil Cooler with Fan
Synthetic 20-50 Oil (Red Line)
Ignition Advance at 27 degrees @ 3,000 RPM
Non-Lean fuel mixture
Fuel Pressure Regulator
Carrera Louvered Deck Lid
Free Flow Oil System
Non-restrictive exhaust system

My concern is during California July-August hot days, the engine oil temp reached >230 degrees.

Engine runs fine but like each of you don't really like to sieze an engine if I can...

Jack

Jack:

What is the displacement of that engine?

Has it been modified for "free-flow" cooling? (i.e; oil pump output blockoff, case drilled and tapped for oil input to the oil gallery, external filter and cooler coming off of the pump cover) or are the oil lines (both output and back in) coming off of the oil pump cover alone?

Can you give us some specs on that "96 plate oil cooler"??

Does your existing fan shroud have the air deflector vanes and a working thermostat installed?

How are you measuring the temperature of your engine? Dip Stick Thermometer or something else?

I'm asking this because I run a 2,110 that's pretty stout, runs a 1971 stock fan shroud and VW cooler with an external 16-pass fan assisted cooler and I NEVER run over 205F.

I wouldn't recommend a Bergman DTM shroud either.

Gordon
i had a bergmann 2275 and it was ok but i did need to put an oil cooler on it because of 2275 and sacramento heat.
i wouldnt do it again if given the choice.
bergmann is a cranky old f---. it is hisway or the hiway. my shroud cracked at the 9oclock position and went 3" before i caught it. drilled a hole to stop it and put a castol racing oil decal on it to hold it together. just my .02 worth.
Heater outlets have proven to imbalance the charge air differentials of all 4 Cylinders/ heads. There is no way to create a better balance due to the characteristics of the imternals of the shroud.
I learned this through direct experience and data acquisition. Unlike others I won't outfit a system just to target a market, above all else it just has to work.
OK, since Jack Blake has gone off to commune with the lower aboriginals of the Amazon basin, I was just wondering......

Exactly how hot does it get in the San Whatchamacallit valley in California, anyway? Or, better still, on one of those endlessly long parking lots they laughingly refer to as "freeways"??

I'm thinking that an early August 2pm temp would be 85-95-ish??

I've often thought that LA temps and Beaufort/Savannah temps are just about the same, month-for-month, so I'm curious, that's all.

Hope Jack makes it back from the Amazon. I've heard that there are BIG Mutha snakes down there.....
