The Bergmann 911 style shrouds look really cool, but are expensive, do not distribute air evenly over all the cylinders (iIrc the fronts get significantly more air than the back), it's not designed for the thermostat flaps and an exterior oil cooler is the only option.  DO NOT SPEND YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY ON ONE!

Will, there's a thread on the Samba where a guy takes (I believe) a Bergmann shroud (and after studying a 911 unit), builds some interior diverters, and after some trial and error, gets much more balanced cooling out of it. IIrc there was work to balance it from side to side as well as front to back.

Here's some reading if you're bored-

And thanks for the compliment; my 16 year old son might disagree with you though...

I've seen some reviews looking at cooling efficacy, and I understand that they're quite bad. The standard doghouse shroud works better, from what I recall. I wish I could locate the article I read about this.

Pat: can you chime in on this?

Anand (Mr. Hypocrite - the guy with two 4 cam fan shrouds on his air cooled motors) LOL

The first time I owned my IM I put on a BB 911 styled shroud.  I never had any cooling problems, but I also didn't have a CHT gauge, so who knows.

It looked really, really nice, but was a bit of a pain to install and I had to cut away some of the engine hood's fiberglass to clear the unit.

With my new engine I went with a stock VW shroud with flaps.

If you want something else besides stock go with a Jake Raby shroud, which is proven to cool properly (but can't be used with heater boxes).

There's no arguing with the fact that they look bad ass.
