The Pertronix SD ignition in my 009 distributor just bit the dust. 4,000 miles, and less than 2 years old. Members on this forum have said that if you install the SD ignition carry a spare set of points with you, just in case. I thought ya, but never did. Luckily, the SD ignition died while the car was in my garage. I'm going back to points, until I decide what to do about the distributor. I'm thinking of going whole-hog and buying the top-of-the line Mallory from John at AC Net. The MDS distributor, which, I think, is another great choice, will not clear my 911 fan shroud, but John tells me that the Mallory will. Is the Mallory worth the expense? ($290) I'm leary about buying another aftermarket CD ignition like Pertronix. I've driven cars with electronic ignitions for over 150,000 miles in the last 10 years and never had one fail.

Pertronix is not a CD ignition, it is a magnetic ("Hall effect") ignition triggering system. I've used Pertronix ignitors on Fords, Chevrolets, and VWs and never had one fail..

Mallory alos makes a mechanical distributor (adjustable advance limit and different adv springs available) with single points for VWs, and Pertronix and Pertronix II are available to fit it.

So many choices...
