It's probably not the type of tires that you have. Remember that most of the weight of your car, perhaps as much as two thirds, is on the rear wheels. If the rear brakes aren't adjusted properly the fronts will lock and the car will continue on, with possibly disastrous consequences. Ask me how I know.
Also, because of the wight bias, the front tires are usually at a much lower pressure than the rears. A difference of as much as 10 psi is often recommended. I ran 20 front, 28 rear.
