Synthetic is the only way to go, and you will be surprised at how quieter it runs and easier it shifts.
Added bonous is the ability to withstand 50 deg C higher temperature without irreperably breaking down.
Oil is cheap insurance.

I run Mobile 1 in my engines too for the same reasons. Break in on dinosaur oil first or you will have problems with rings seating
I've been running Amsoil Synthetic Gear Lube. I don't have enough miles to evaluate, but nothing unusual,no problems so far.It comes highly recommended by Aircooled.net.
They sell it if you decide to use and can't find a local source.
Interesting reading:
Go to www.aircooled.net and look at the technical article they have posted concerning Synthetic oil.

Interesting fact:
Harley-Davidson, for the last year or two, recommends their 20/50 fully synthetic motor oil for engine, trans, and primary drive (which houses the wet clutch)for every motorcycle they make.
That might be worth trying.
I've been using it in my 2027 Type 1 engine. So far so good!
Oil temp tends to run cooler with Synthetics too!

I found out through Gord that Rancho Transmissions (of course they know their stuff) recommend regular hypoid and not synthetic on these transaxles. Also, their first recommended transaxle oil change is at the 20,000 (!!) mile mark. I just went by the authorized VW Service Manual which says change at the 600 mile mark whether new or rebuilt....We learn new things every day....
