Better way to hold up the engine lid?

So bring back the deck lid mount so that one of the holes is being shared with the hinge?  That would mean mounting the firewall bracket much much lower.

 

I found that this was the lowest I could go while still being able to get a decent sized screwdriver in there.  Otherwise, the engine is in the way and I don't have much (if any) leverage to screw on the lower bracket.

Yes, there is an interplay between several factors and getting a screwdriver on that lower bracket is certainly important! 

 

Maybe my strut is shorter when extended?  I do worry about that force being on the fiberglass though.

 

If you get a quick second, measure your strut up... I'm curious now as to the extended length.

 

Here's to hoping the 10lb strut I have coming is stong enough to pop the lid but not too strong to bow out the top when closed.

Perhaps that's why you experienced the bowing, because you're connected to the fiberglass.

 

I did not experience bowing and I'm connected to the hinge.

 

I'll measure the extended length next time I get the Speedster out.  I have to park it in town because of where I live and the dirt roads.

I thought the same thing so I applied pressure at the hing trying to simulate the shock as if it were installed there.  It did the same thing, "bowed up."

 

If this new shock does the same thing, I'll relocate further back and utilize one of the hinge mounts.

My strut is 16" extended, from socket to socket. Any longer and the lower mount was too low to get a screwdriver down there to attach the lower mount. However a longer strut and a lower mount would give you a greater angle and allow you to use a lower pressure strut.
