I have a VDO tach that acts like an old mechanical drive tach. When I first start and leave to ride, the tach is not working at all. After a mile or two, the needle will very slowly creep up to what I believe is an accurate reading, and it works fine after that. Now, if the tach is merely counting sparks, they are constant pulses. How can that needle act like it's driven by a cable with a worn tip dragging in cold grease???

Hi Dick,
Electronic tachs with a rotating needle usually have the same pivot shaft configuration as a manual tach. It sounds like yours needs lubrication. You may want to check for Youtube videos. Best of luck and please keep the group informed of progress.
Although most of the new VDO electronic gauges use a GPS antenna sender, they can also receive a signal from a VDO Hall Effect sender which uses the old mechanical cable to generate a speedo signL. Do you know which yours is using? Might check the left front bearing hub for a cable. If cable then the cable has a bend in it or it needs lubricating or replacing.
When my Speedo was doing weird stuff, I pulled it apart and cleaned all the 40 year old grease out of it and re-lubed it. Works perfectly now.
