Most people running a VW engine with a 5-speed transmision utilize a close ratio 3rd & 4th gear. The 5th gear retains the same ratio as the 4th gear in a 4 speed tranny. Altering the overall gear ratio for top speed would effect the speed of the cooling fan and may cause overheating.
I think my 1776 surprised Hell out of Patrick and his 2110 after the car show we attended... I'm not so sure there is a real serious seat- of-the-pants difference. More and closer gears in either configuration might make you a little quicker but I don't think there is a vast difference until you become monsterously George in your build.

If it's a fairly stock 1776 with a 5 speed..well then a hot 2110, running a 4 speed, would blow it away. I've had both motors. Now, if its a hot 1776 with a 5 speed, verus a hot 2110 with a 4 speed, well that's still 100-120 hp verus 140-150 hp. Would the extra gear make that much of a difference? It would not be that much more expensive to build a hot 2110 over a hot 1776, but a 5 speed can cost a fair amount more.
