He certainly did and Bill's passing was a terrible loss to us all but to the West Coasters who Bill was very close to. I met Bill at the Morro Bay event and he was an instant good friend! The memorial run that Gerd and others organize is a nice annual memorial event in Bill's honor.
This should be a warning to us all--these cars are 4 wheel motorcycles that demand incredible concentration and care driving. In my 5 years here this was the only such accident I am aware of so that says a lot about the heed the folks pay when driving these little cars.
I love driving my Speedster and have done everything I know of to improve safety but I understand it will damned sure bite me if I let it.
Folks--be careful out there!
Rest in peace, Bill.
I never met Bill, but the look in Gerd's eyes when he talks about him makes me wish I had.
Hi Gerd,
I can't make it this time, hopefully on the next drive.
Eddy
THANKS EDDY WILL CATCH UP WITH U LATER
CHRISTIAN, YES BILL DIED DOING WHAT HE LOVED TO DO AND THAT WAS CRUISING IN HIS SPEEDSTER. BOUGHT AN ENGINE TO BIG, TOOK A TURN, REAR END SWUNG OUT AND HE HIT A FOCKEN POLE (AS WIDE AS ME) ON HIS DRIVERS DOOR AND IT FLIPPED THE CAR OVER ON HIS HEAD AND HE SLID DOWN THE ROAD THAT WAY. SORRY TO BE GRAPHIC BUT JACK IS SO RIGHT AND BILL WOULD NEVER WANT ANY OF US TO DIE OTHER THAN IN OLD AGE DRIVING OUR CARS. I STILL CANT GET OUT OF MY MIND THAT 6 TO 8 INCHES ON EITHER SIDE OF THAT FOCKEN POLE AND HE WOULD HAVE WALKED AWAY LAUGHING HIS ASS OFF AND PAID A **** LOAD TO REPAIR THE CAR.
LOTS OF GREAT FRIENDS TO BE MADE ON THIS SITE JUST DRIVE SAFE.
Gerd--I know Bill liked to drive with his dog---did the dog survive that crash?
Ginny & I will be there. The weather forecast is hot & humid, so we'll leave the Speedster at home bring our other car. See you guys there at 10:00am.
Looks like the 3 Amigo's ride again, see you guys tomorrow....
I have to miss this one, Fiscal year end and quit a few proposals to get out. everyone be safe and enjoy the ride.
Larry
Just got back from Bill's memorial run, didn't bring a camera, but some pic's were taken & I'm sure they will appear real soon....I left a Rubber Mr Bill last year, on the gate post that Bill hit when his tub flipped, Didn't think it would still be there, but there it was, with about a year's worth of dirt accumulated on it.....A few somber moments, & then off through the hills again....
RIP Bill.....
WAS GOOD DAY, THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO CAME
JIMMY I GOT YOUR TEXT WHEN I GOT DOWN TO THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL I HAD NO CONNECTION UP THERE
ON A SIDE NOTE NANCY GAVE ME BILLS NASCAR CAP SO ILL BE WEARING IT TO THE RUDDER ROOM WHEN WE BREAK IN VINCES TRUCK
Glad to see our knucklehead SOC friends today on the 'Drive-Your-Other-Car-Memorial-Cruise' for Mr. Bill! Observing a few somber moments and sharing remembrances of our good buddy reminded us that its the people and not the cars that make this group. RIP Mr. Bill!
As a side note to my partners in crime; WRT our MB overheating going up the Angeles Crest Hwy, turns out that my radiator cap had popped off and lost some coolant. Found the cap resting on top of my manifold, replenished the coolant, applied the cap and off we went without any further issues!
The 3 amigos in the classic 'Missing Amigo' formation...

Jimmy, did you get a pic of Gerdddd's queer car
GAY NOT QUEER
Exactly what I would have expected....Love the 20 inchers....
I like the color combo, but smaller wheels would actually look better IMHO.

Despite what folks say, Gerddddd, I think that's a fine looking (and even better driving) car. I was being tactful about the orange one.
I am more interested in an older car because I do like to tinker and prefer something uncommon, but there are a couple of newer ones that are on my radar like this or a Honda S2000.
Lane, too bad about the Webers. I am SOOO glad that I got the jet doctors installed.
Lane, I don't remember reading anything bad about the Miata, although I'd take the Honda S2000
over Gerdddd's gay car any day...I just like pulling his chain....
What about an NSX, They are a very nice looking ride....
All these suggestions and no one has mentioned a nice, pre-owned, earlier 911. I picked up my first 911 three years ago, once I got over the transmission rebuild, the car has been flawless. I'll bet you could pick up a decent one for 2/3's the price of your "$30,000 windfall".
So, I see Gerd bought the Miata with the top.
So, let me get this right, the tub was sold for 30 large?
It's not a windfall until someone buys it...

Lane:
You could look for an early Miata, if you are at all interested in Miatas. They are lighter, and don't have all the extras that the newer ones come with. I prefer the simpler body lines, also.
They make great track cars, and can be modified all you want. Mine drove circles around my useless TR6.
No, Vince, I was just trying to make Lane have happy thoughts. He says he wants 30 large.
I like the early 911 idea, at least their collector pieces & most likely hold value...
but there are many "fun cars to drive" to chose from....
67 CONVERTIBLE BUG
And this is the Conundrum that Lane has placed himself in. BTW, how did this serious/somber thread of Bill's get switched over to Lane's problem?
Probably one step away from the Miata, but I have always liked the original Audi TT. I think its lines are the most similar to the Speedster. In coupe form it would npbe a comfortable ride.
Yeah, what Rich said. How'd my topic wind up taking over this one?
Sorry, Mr. Bill. Then again, if you have any thoughts, please send them to me in a dream or something.
