I've been having two, maybe unrelated symptoms lately, 1) Brake squealing during slow speed stops and 2) Extra black gook on my RR wheel (not a lot, but more than the brake dust on the other 4 wheels).

At first, I just thought it was brake dust, now I'm wondering if I have a brake fluid leak.  Carey installed rear disc brakes this past winter.

Braking function is fine.

Any thoughts?

Cary thought the same as I did.  Is your car a swing axle?  If so your rear bearings are lubricated by transmission fluid that moves down from the tranny to the rear bearings.  I had that same problem and the inside of my rear tires became slathered with thanny fluid---a big mess.  The fix was rear bearings and seals plus in my case, my rear brake pads were trashed bu the oil so I had to replace those too.

Are the insides of your rear wheels covered with oil?

Not a giant problem but just one of those lovely Speedster bumps in the road.  I know you will be all set and fixed whatever for corn daze.

Speaking of black gook, last night I took the Speedster to a cruise in the next town over.

On the way, I saw some black gook coming over the windshield. It hit me in the shoulder and side of my neck and spattered around the inside of the car. It seemed to have been about half a cup full. When I parked I saw more black gook had hit the front of the car.

I'm glad it didn't hit me full in the face.

Damn birds.

Jack,

I haven't pulled the wheel off yet.  I'm going to my friend Bill's (buckwheat on this board) on Monday, weather permitting.  He has all of the knowledge, all of the tools, and a huge garage to work in.

I've been getting some brake noise on low speed stops.  I'm thinking that oil on the RR brake pads might be the culprit.

If so, it will be my first opportunity to change brake pads in my life.  Another learning opportunity :-)

I'm happy that I now have rear discs.  Much easier than monkeying around with the castle nut.

I hope you're right Jack.  I was concerned about the pads, but Bill felt that they look ok & I trust his judgement.  I think I caught this pretty early because I clean the wheels frequently.  Also, the leak wasn't that bad.  I probably have put 1500 miles on the car since the rear disc conversion and lost only 1/2 quart of trans fluid.

Another step up the learning curve :-)

No doubt you do, Tom.  I went through the same thing only mine was so bad that the brake discs were ruined.  Glad you solved that issue!
