The pump/filter assembly is one solution; you can also buy a pump cover that takes the oil out of the engine (through hose), to a remote filter assembly and returns it to an oil galley just before the oil pressure sensor. This is referred to as a full flow system, and the block has to be drilled and tapped (for the oil hose fitting) for this modification. It's generally done when the case is apart for a rebuild, but with a little care can be done with the engine together- it's been done while still installed in the car.
The pump/filter units (like the one pictured above) typically have small 1/4" passages and will pump more oil than the cover can pass above about 6,000rpm, so that should be the engine speed limit if considering one. Al
PS- And you're right; not every exhaust will fit with a filter/pump.
