Bonneville Salt Flat Wheel Covers

I couldn't resist the idea of being different. Merlot equipped with a set of spun stainless steel wheel covers. These were used on a lot of cars at the Bonneville Salt Flats during the 50's. I have always want them on my cars during high school and college. So, here they are! An entirely different look for a Speedster. Ready to attempt a land speed record at Bonneville!

Now you need to complete the look by removing some of the shiny chrome trim, get a much lower windscreen, and put some numbers on the side ;->

AWESOME!!!! I love those things.

And add an aluminum cover (a la wing) to the luggage rack and you'd be set to go.

Thanks for the commits. They are available in 14, 15 and 16 inch wheels.
They conceal the valve stems in the covers to reduce the wind resistance! The covers are held in place with spring fingers or claws all around the covers.

I have a matched set of Hella Berliner mirrors in black. These are NOS in the box. Should I replace the chrome ones? The Hellas have more degrees of movement and the left side one will be better than the chrome one. Green dots also!

The Beck wheel covers looked good on your car it had a nice look . i lked the way it looked with that red paint..

Good for you. Different am GOOD! Did you order them online, pick them up somewhere or didja meet a dude who had a pile of them lying around?
I'm very, very interested in seeing how they'd look on our tub. That might just be the icing -- if'n you don't mind the intrusion into your very cool idea.
That might be the first truly original thought on this site in years. Not slighting anyone else's creativity, but really. I don't think that's been done before.

Hey Cory, I was thinking about those wheel covers on The Hoopty too. On one hand I'd hate to cover up those nice Centerlines, but I think the lakester look would work.

Got a 911 boat tail that I could use to cover the luggage rack?

Ideas on the BLACK Hella Berliner mirrors...too replace the chrome. The Berliners was used in the 50's also. They were more streamlined than the Raydot or the Tourist Trophy type. Waiting for usin's ids.

You may have shown me those mirrors when we were at your place, but if you did I forgot what they looked like. Howzabout a picture?

I love the look of those things! They'd be perfect on the hoopty. Wasn't there someone a few months back (I recall pics of the car on snow in europe somewhere?) that was flat black and had those covers?

No I have pictures of Aaron's car and his MGB look-a-like Lapfer It's a red maroon with a nice Pinkish shade in it like brandywine . the saddle/tan interior is as clean as a pin ..

I'd put the 1950 merury trim rings on Lane's car and repaint the wheels to the same color as the car.. They did that back then as well...

I think they would look good on that retro 356 silver fastback i saw here a while back..

I initially planned to go with trim rings, but I have yet to find any that really fit properly. Now I'm getting to where I like it without 'em.

Um, Barry, the wheels ARE painted to match the car. They just look a little darker because they're in shadow.

Crazy idea...have a pin stripe painted around the rim, or go wild have a design that circles the cap. You could go as fancy as you like. Color your choice. There was a lot skilled strippers doing various work on lead slides and rods.

The pin stripe idea has also crossed my mind. At this point it's more likely than the trim ring thing. I just realized that I've had different wheels every year at Carlisle so far. I seem to have a problem with commitment. pretty soon I'll be as bad as Terry Nuckels. ;-)
