Had to throw this out there again... This is a must have for you IM owners out there. From the beautiful Italian sports cars produced from the 50's til the 70's to the 356 replicas produced today. This book is very well done.

Technically, Jimbo and I are both right. It was the 356th project design from the Porsche desk.
It was the 356th numerically designated engineering project...but not the 356th Porsche project.
When he went independant under his own name his very first commission was designated "Project 101"

I dunno... As a computer geek I immediately recognized that 255 is the highest number that can be represented by 8 bits in the binary number system. That would be significant to one of us.
Those of you without geek-cred can ignore this post -as I'm sure most will.

So IMRoadster's list explains why a friend in Massachusetts with an early Speedster has "TYP540" as a license plate. Technically, the Speedster design is a 540.
