So, on my very last day of speedster driving of the year, an SUV driver decides to make my day by backing into my front end. His trailer hitch poked a pretty good size hole (maybe 8" x 12") in my fiberglass (1990 CMC), just behind where the license plate sits. Damage is 100% cosmetic (it didn't push through to the battery tray), but it is serious damage that will require skill beyond that which I can handle.

Has anybody in greater Boston worked with a body shop they could recommend? The big challenge (I think) will be color matching to the 15 year old gel coat (which is theoretically white). I was toying with having the whole thing repainted this winter anyway, so this at least gives me the excuse to get it done...

Depending upon how far you want to travel, SCOTT'S CLASSIC IMPORTS on route 106 in Halifax , MA (Halifax is on the South Shore next to Pembroke, near Kingston and Duxbury) works on medium high end (Jags and Porsches) and mid-point (Triumph, Damlier, and MG) sports cars. Full restoration, body work , paint, interior, and/or mechanical.

If you don't mind heading a bit South, they're the best around.

Luck,

TC
I'm leaning towards a complete repaint (it was one of my winter to-do's before yesterday). And I'd do the fiberglass repair myself, except that my current garage situation (none) doesn't give me any place to do it. Living in the city has its merits (I walk to work), but some serious drawbacks when it comes to automotive topics.

Any thoughts on alternate colors? It's currently white/ivory with a red interior - I'm thinking of either sticking with white or going to silver or grey. The red interior seems to limit exterior options somewhat.
Ted,

I did go to ProFinish in Pittsfield. Fortunately, they are only a few miles from where my dad smashed it. I got two estimates from them: one to fix the damage, and another to clear-coat the rest of the car. The total tab came to around 3K, an even split. I cannot say enough good things about the finish on my car. Not only can i not see any signs of the original damage, but the clearcoat took my v.s. from a sub-par finish to something that gets just as many comments as the car itself.

Also, for what it's worth, they kept their schedule to the day. I also ended up saving about $700 by stripping the car and re-assembling it myself. (the original quote was closer to $4K)
