Anything can be done. They are a bit broad to fit into the frame rail (as Jake can extrapolate on), but they can be made to fit.

Carefully weigh the advantages and disadantages and measure with great detail against your skill level. In all cases, physically smaller engines are easier to install in a spyder. But other ones do fit. There are a couple of air cooled 6's, a host of subarus both n/a and turbo, even a northstar powered car.

The subie is easier to fit than the wider boxster engine (in process at Jake's/Becks) and in turbo form is more power stock versus stock.

We considered doing this and using the whole boxster as a donor car. Passed on it at the time as wrecked boxsters were still expensive, the "S" version hadn't come out, there were issues with RMS. Effectively, we considered re-bodying the boxster as a spyder by taking the entire engine/trans rear suspension subframe assemblies, front as well, lose the power rack. Surprisingly these parts proved to be not only complex, but rather heavy...

With boxsters changing hands for 10K right now as decent drivers, the market has changed significantly and this would be a consideration.

Of course, that could be why clever Jake Raby and adventurous Chuck Beck are exploring that possibility.
