You guys know the story of the Princess and the electrons?
No?
Well, lemme just tell you. My charming new bride, who isn't even a little bit afraid of a five-day stint in the cold and windy Rockefeller Center Plaza, just got done with her work as the lead electrician on the 2008 Tree Lighting there.
She says she was a small cog in a big machine, but she was on the radio an awful lot, providing directions and giving consent for movement requests and process steps. Very impressive.
I was a bump on a log for three of those days, watching as she ran her crew and checked in on every little thing every five minutes. It was chilly, but she trooped around in her little hat and coat, and busted her ass for the national television audience.
I'm in awe of the mad electrical skills. If it plugged in and turned on, she was responsible for it. Check out the pictures, and imagine the little Rock Center electrical meter zinging away ...
The bands and all were pretty neat, but I only really paid attention to what she was doing.
Meanwhile, Bryant Park, a few blocks away, was the site of another tree lighting ceremony. Five, Four, Three, Two, One ... and no lights. Their electrician -- the one at the remote switch -- was apparently off on a dinner break. No lights for them.
Oops!
But Teresa and the Rock Center tree were right on time.

Yup, that WAS bad.....

I had to call Teresa for some info this morning and I think I got her up and out of bed at 10:30am or so (and for that I'm truly sorry....Honest!)

Seems she has been working 16-20 hour days for the past week (although it probably wouldn't have taken as long each day if Cory wasn't hanging around) and had today off (Saturday) and back to work tomorrow.

At first I thought I was lucky to have been in Management in my career, but then I remembered my 70-80 hour weeks as "normal" and figured we were about equal. But, then....I worked 70 hour weeks and got paid for 40 (boy, was I a chump) whereas I hope she's getting fair union wages for what she does.....

Anyway, What a great show at the Rock!!!!!!!!

gn
What a trip, huh?
She's got a Stagehands card from Charleston, and that helps her get work where she runs the crews, but her work in NYC is as an independent contractor. Usually, she works longer hours than what she shows on the invoice, but she's doing the CAD and VectorWorks power drawings for the jobs and ordering the equipment and trucks from supply houses in the City and New Jersey.
It's management, just a different flavor. Her hours would KILL me.
