So, my speedster is having some brake issues. I've got discs up front, drums in rear and SS brake lines. I just bought the vehicle and it has been sitting for a couple years with very little use( only driver a few hundred miles) The problem I am having is pedal dropping to floor after repeated braking. I have bled lines and found a lot of air on left side- seemed to help initially, but now having issue again. I can find no leaks at any spots where brake lines attach to calipers/drums or resovoirs. However, it appears to be "wet" around the rubber boot where brake pedal plunger/rod meets firewall inside the car.. My suspicion is the part that the brake pedal rod is attached to on other side of firewall, but I don't know what its called. Looks like it may be a hydraulic distribution valve for the brakes! (Approx 4" long, made of steel and has 2 brake lines coming off of it to calipers. )

Can someone tell me what the piece is and also what they feel May be the cause of my brakes not working consistently?

Thanks!

Did you check the master cylinder for any leaks? It may need to be replaced as well.

It's your master cylinder.  Leaking brake fluid from the seal around the plunger within the master cylinder where the push rod connects with (and this leaking brake fluid entering the passanger compartment) is a classic sign that the master cylinder is bad.  The solution is to replace it.

My advice would be to replace it with the best German made master cylinder that you can find, so that this is a one-time thing for the next 5+ years.  Its a pretty easy job (about 2 hours).  If you can bleed brakes you can change a master cylinder.  Hint, prebleed the master cylinder before installation to minimize the bleed time after installation.  Hope this helps.  Grant

Grant is most likely right and you need to replace your M/C. Your welcome to use my homemade pressure bleeder if you need to bleed your system and it sounds like you do. Could try and bleed first and if does not work replace the M/C. Just re-did my system a couple of weeks ago - very simple and one man job with the pressure tank.

I think Gordon passed this along a few years ago and I built one.

Let me know - I can drop off or give a hand

Be very careful when removing the metal brake lines - they tend to rust to the threaded end so that when you try to remove them they twist off the end, making them useless.

I usually start a couple of days ahead of time and spray the end of the line (where the tube enters the threaded end) with a 50/50 mixture of acetone and automatic transmission fluid, twice a day, just a spritz.  That usually penetrates the rust and it will (usually) spin right out.
