I'm a new owner of a 356 replica and love the car after owning a 1953 MGTD for a few years. Was planning to take a cruise with the car over the holidays and just noticed the brake lights are on all the time when the key is on. My mechanic just replaced the switch but he is now off for the holidays. I'm very mechanically inclined but have never had time to discover what makes the car tick but when time permits I will assume the responsibility of doing my own repairs and maintenance. Here's the problem: If I depress the pedal slightly the lights go out and then as I depress it more, they come on again as they should. So I suspect it is a switch adjustment issue. BUT, I can't locate the switch, or for that matter the master cylinder (which is where I suspect the switch is located). Any advice?

The master cylinder is located under the gas tank. You will need to remove the driver's side front wheel to get easy access. Many of these units are equipped with a spare switch. You may be able to just move the connector from one switch to the other to solve your problem. It's worth a try.
Thanks for the reply! My mechanic did mention he replaced 2 switches so I assume the main sw. and the spare were both replaced.
So you suspect the switch has failed and moving the wire to the spare may be the answer. I take it that my suspicion that there is an adjustment that could be made on the switch so the lights would be off when the pedal is not being depressed was incorrect?
If you have a standard configuration, the master cylinder can be seen behind the left front wheel, mounted to the fire wall..... The master cylinders are normally dual circuit (front/rear) types with a switch used in each section, even though only one is actually required... You may have either of two styles of switch. One style has two wire connectors, the other has three.... The three wire units were used to detect master cylinder problems on OEM applications and are not normally used in replicas for that purpose.... It could be you have the three prong type and it / they are cross wired....
Just my .02....
Thanks for the info! And so the journey begins...
Good wiring diagrams at Speedy Jim's VW site. Has schematics for both the 2 and 3 prongs switches.
Great. I'll check the Jim's site out.
I don't really know. I'm one of the least mechanically savy on this sight, but I'm sure the gurus will help :-)
There is no "adjustment" when standard VW switches are used....
