OBTW: There are two little, silver, hex-shaped cans on the master cylinder (both clear in the picture) that one or both may have wires running to.

They are both stop light switches (there is one for each brake circuit (front/rear) on the car).

One, or both, is bad on your car and it's just as easy to replace both at the same time as one. Do the swap quickly, and re-fill your brake reservoir after replacing each one as the Master Cylinder will leak from those holes when the switch is removed (put a rag under the M/C to catch the leaked fluid. DO NOT re-use leaked fluid).

As an afterthought, try pulling the wires off of the switches and see if your brake lights STILL stay on. If so, then the problem is probably elsewhere and you'll have to dig a little to find it (like maybe in your emergency flasher switch, if you're using a stock VW one, or somewhere in the wiring harness for a short).

good luck...

Hey,
Also check the connections at the lights. With Fiberglass bodies they have to have a seprate ground wire and some times they come in contact with the power wires. This cause shorting in the switch making it fail either in a closed (Brake light off) or an open postion (brake lights on).. If you switch to the second switch and this happends again in less then a year start checking wires..
