I'm pretty sure all I have is a brass T and some hose clamps. Rubber fuel line from where it comes out of the tunnel, fuel filter with some hose clamps before the firewall, rubber hose to the mechanical fuel pump, rubber hose to an area at the middle of the shroud into the brass tee with some hose clamps, and rubber hose to the carbs. I think you used the term KISS. Nothing simpler than a plain old brass tee and some clamps. I'm using regular rubber fuel lines from NAPA so it works with the brass tee I have pictured. You mentioned rigid fuel lines. Sounds too complicated to me.

Things are not smiling well on the Duckworth family today. I was getting even less compression on the right side, about 60 pounds comma it is making a slight noise. I thought maybe it was the fan shroud. Drove it down the road , I'm coming up the road which was only about 50 feet I dropped a valve on number 4 exhaust.

At least now I know how to take the engine out relatively quickly...

Well, I'm past the format stage. I have the engine back in the car, I got ready to start it up, but the fuel pump wouldn't come on. So I went to the back of the car and Traced the wires, and after all bundled up, I found several loose connections. Is one skinny wire coming off of the plus side of the coil with no connection, but it looks like it went into another stick connection from the front. You can see it in the photograph with the male  end on it. Then I found an orange thick wire that is live coming out of the black box it looks like it turn signal relay.Is there a wiring diagram for these things?

I really believe this thing will run...if I can get all the wires right...

I don't like rubber hose or a pressure regulator in the engine compartment. I had a massive pressure regulator failure that dumped gas in the compartment, but luckily did not catch fire. And I don't like how rubber hoses age and can fail. 

I replaced it all with a hardline kit from AirKewld. I went to a 3.5 psi rotary fuel pump and eliminated the pressure regulator. 

Because of my fear of an engine fire, I also installed a BlazeCut fire suppression system, carry a Halon fire extinguisher and put gas struts on the engine lid so that it opens automatically.

Almost all of the wires and the relay pictured in your engine bay are not factory.  We do not use butt connectors in the harness nor do we use those DIY insulated crimp fittings.  If you look at the green wire on your temperature sender you'll see a soldered spade terminal and shrink tube to seal it.  That wire appears to be factory.  This might help you quickly identify what was added to your harness.

I'll e-mail you some wiring info, but there will be several differences.  These will mainly be in the turn signals, headlights, and brake light wiring.  Your early headlights use a different type of relay than current cars, and the early brake run through the turn signal unit, much like and early Beetle did.  Of course, you'll have to track down anything that was added also.

I'm also happy to help with identifying as much as I can for you.  I know the early harness by heart still...

Even thoughI have NO IDEA what is going on in your engine bay, looking at your photos I think I've figured out what someone was trying to do and what most of your problem is.

That appears to be a standard Bosch 5 pin relay, grounded to the engine doghouse/shroud

The red wire on the coil is your main power to the coil and it looks like they've powered it with a relay, but that is only a guess and assumes that the heavier red wire that leaves the screen at the top of your picture is the same red wire that enters the screen top left and has the bullet terminal crimped on it.  If it is not the same wire, then the relay is powered OFF the coil and your coil power in unplugged directly.

The orange wire would have power when the relay is off, it is just how those relays work, and if you don;t need power on that wire for anything, then it should be unpinned.

I emailed you stock schematics and a legend with translation (all I have from the early cars is the original Portuguese diagrams, sorry)

 

Thanks Carey,  I will look at all the information you sent me when I get home later this afternoon. I have to get out and mow a couple of friends yards for them today. My big concern was the small wire coming out of the coil that might have gone into the largerwire. It really does look like a Homebrew wiring job. I still don't understand why my fuel pump stopped working when I didn't even do anything to it.

Carey wins the prize!!! I reconnected the wire that came off of the coil to the one that had the bullet connection on it. I still have the problem of the hot all the time wire but I  I'll wrap it up and hide it away someplace where nobody else can find it...

Ps, the engine starts. I just need to reconnect the fresh air hoses from the shroud to the heater boxes.  I also wrapped the headers.
