I have an older Intermecchanica Speedster. In checking repro Speedsters, authentic Porsche Speedsters and air cooled VWs, I notice that around the periphery of the engine and reaching to the body of the car, a plate which isolates the upper engine from whatever is going on under the car. A catalog from BFY obsolete parts lists this plate a "breastplate." I'm told a breastplate is essential in cooling the engine, and being without it is leading to trouble. Is this so?

I'd appreciate any advise in this matter.

As the posts above say you definitely need to isolate the top of the engine from the bottom especially at the back of the car/engine to ensure adquate cooling. You don't want expelled hot air to be recirculated through the fan so you need fresh air entering the top front part of the engine (behind the fan shroud).
