That's basically how I joined the PCA club up here. I used the VIN of the 1995 993 that my engine came out of. Yes, my engine is genuine Porschaaa (along with some other bits).
I just joined to go on the DE days at Mosport, but I was disallowed anyway. Hence, I do not attend any PCA events. I figure it's their loss.

You’ll catch on the humor in due time.
SOME Porsche people look down on our plastic cars because they don’t have a Porsche VIN number. If you used a real Porsche part number as a VIN number maybe those Porsche people who don’t like our cars would accept your car as a Porsche.

I think mppickett said it well in another thread:
"Oh, I love to go look at someone else's obsession. I'm glad they want to share it with the hoi polloi (believe it or not, that's Greek, not Hawaiian). If they're sharing it because they love it, I'll stop and chat. If they're sharing it because it validates their self worth, I'll glide on by. In either case I'm glad to see cool things. Besides, any club that would have me as a member..."
It would appear that some Porsche owners, to different extents, validate their self worth through the car they drive, and @edsnova is commenting on that behavior. I grew up in a Southern California beach town and many of the residents were aerospace engineers, and many of the new young engineers straight out of college would celebrate their new income by buying a Corvette to impress the local beach girls. A few were smart enough to figure out that the local girls were not impressed by Corvettes, so they traded their Corvette in for a Porsche. I don't think any of the young engineers ever figured out that the only car that impressed the local girls was an old beat up VW van with rusty surf racks and a Mexican blanket for a seat cover.

Bob, I joined with the VIN of my 1972 911T a while back. Now I use a 73 T basket case sitting behind my friend's house. I get to do DE sometimes, but they black-flagged me for "oil", yeah, the car smoked off-throttle some, but it wasn't dripping onto the track. I think it was because I was pointed by some much more modern and "faster" cars LOL!
Brock: sorry for the thread-jack. It was supposed to be a very small joke.
Yeah, sorry. Now back to your build....

These things often happen and in your defense you were left unsupervised while using the keyboard.
baaaaaaaaaa
Faster than a speeding thread jack!
Able to leap 5 guys in straw hats in a single bound!
All good guys!
Dash almost glassed in, i had never un-wrapped the dash and just found out i never got a glove box door.....
You decided to go with a standard emerg brake instead of the umbrella.
What brand roll cage ? I assume a pre-built cage for a 356? I had one in my 914 years ago, it was nice and fit well. Your car is looking great. Are you powder coating the cage?
IaM-Ray posted:You decided to go with a standard emerg brake instead of the umbrella.
Can't pull a handbrake turn with an umbrella handle...
Ray , im guessing you mean the ones i see the 550s using? Yeah im not paying that knid of $ for that.
Jimmy , its a 10 point weld in from Rhodes for a Bug.
That makes sense. I didn't even consider using a bug cage . The cage kit I bought for my 914 had weld in mounting plates that the cage bolted onto. This way the rest of the cage could be sent out for powder coating and then bolted into the car. Are you planning on coating or painting your cage? It should really stiffen the car up. That is why I opted for the cage in my 914. I needed the extra stiffening to offset the stiff suspension setup I had for auto-crossing. The body flex was the 5th suspension tuning consideration. I had this 914 stripped down to 1650 lbs. It was an amazingly fast cone carver. Took 1st place in my Louisville Region SCCA n 2001.
Jimmy, very cool! No i really dont know how i could justify powder coating it. It will have so many weld joints that will still have to be painted afterwards anyway. It will most likely end up body color.

Are weld joints not powder coat friendly? I don't mind showing my ignorance with my questions, because I have learned that there is usually at least one other person out there with the same question.

I think what he's saying is that once it's all welded together it will be too difficult to get powder coated...

Duh, me. Ok, maybe no one else had that question.
You cant put in once its together and you can't take the body off after it's in.....so painted it will be.

To me for the roll cage my suggestion is you investigate doing a small test using POR-15 I did a radiator at my home and had my painter do it up with a paint brush in POR-15 a couple of coats. It looks so glossy like a fridge enamel now I used the non-uv black but you would need UV safe.
It is just so awesome it looks like powder coated .
Now remember the unit is cast
That is a nice coating.
Does POR-15 (or something similar) come in white at all? I have a door inner seam on my DD that has rust beginning to show when the door is opened and would love to treat over it to let it seep in, rather than grind it out and repaint everything.
After it is dried it is paintable
Brock...Are the bars welded to the frame under the body ?
Bruce, absolutely! Or the will be when it comes time to fully weld the joints.......

Brock, fyi, the 550 brake handles are cool (and too much $$) but the setup Ray's talking about is the under-the-dash e-brake handle the original 356s had. It's something like what a '66 GMC pickup truck would have had—reach down, pull he handle toward you to lock the rear wheels; pull and twist the handle clockwise to let it back down.
Very tricky to fabricate and ends up being even more money than the 550 stick handle.
Also not as functional as the good ol' Bug handle.
But very much cool factor for those in the know.
Love the cage job. You are definitely The Man.
Will those cool 550 handled fit a Beck 356?
My pb cables are cut and its done as far as im concerned.....
More cage, i underestimated how hard it would be to get to all these joints to weld!
X marks the spot. That is an interesting deviation from the norm in set up of the bar.
Yeah normally in the bug these go straight back and to a plate above the body mounts behind the back seat. But this should be stronger and look much cooler. 😎
Hey you could always baseball stitch leather over it if you do not want to paint it.
check out Master Series AG111brushable tractor paint
Available in semi gloss too.Great stuff.

looks interesting. Is there a northern distributor?
Nice. If that was my work, the photos would be of a smoking hulk of plastic. Yours just looks like it will withstand a direct hit from a meteor.
