Hi all, newbie to the (great) site here. I've been doing some research on 356s and 550s and in ads i often see reference to the quality of the replica (ie replica manufacturer)...but less is said about the actual build process itself and by whom (i wouldn't buy a car from someone with my skills, for example). Am i right in thinking this is just an important a consideration?

Incdentally, if anyone knows of anythng good with a pre 66 title i'm all ears...

You seem to be asking who actually builds the cars.  Without statistical proof, I am guessing that overe 90% of the Speedster/Syders made are turn-key, where the buyer pays the money and drives off.  There are some talented exceptions to that rule, and most of them are on this site.

However, if you see a Beck (Special Edition), Vintage, JPS, or SAS car advertised, it is safe to assume that the manufacturer made a completed car.  With that in mind, the only provenance needed is the rep of the maker.  I hope I didn't misunderstand your post.  BTW, welcome and good luck with your search.

Majority of FiberFab and Classic Motor Carriages (CMC eventually bought FF) were owner built.  I'm guessing  10% were their builds were farmed out --- all those you saw in airports back in the mid 1980's.  So there build quality can vary - but they are a bit cheaper where they could be brought up to a higher standard in a refurb.  A variable might be engine builder as several companies produce junk.

Pre-66 is going back aways - king pin, swing axle and single port 40 hp.
