How the devil do I assemble the hard rubber bump stop to the metal bump stop seat?? (swing axel)

The opening in the base of the rubber stop is 5/8"
The donut knob that it has to fit over is 1"

There's a 3/8" difference and absolutely no way I can stretch that hard rubber stop to muscle it in place...I thought of heating the stop in hot water to expand it, then perhaps it could be forced onto an ice cold metal knob!.. But I've learned my lesson to ASK FIRST before screwing up with a naive assumption.

Thanks Jeff for your suggestion, which is about what I did. Bill Murdock gave me a tip that solved the problem: Smooth sanded the mushroom. Chamford the hole in the bottom of the stop and popped it in the microwave for 30 seconds. Liberally applied grease to both surfaces and then seated the stop over the mushroom by pounding with a mallet... and a lot of gutteral ninja grunts!

For some reason my VS didn't have bump stops at all. And there was no indication (marks or scrapes) on the spring plates that they'd ever been installed! I can't imagine why?
