Hello all,

I missed out on buying an Intermeccanica speedster 5 years ago and I have been haunted since! I have a chance to buy a unfinished CMC car for about 3,000 which includes engine and trans which may be questionable. Body is mounted on pan and that's it. Owner explains that because of CMC's issues, there are a few missing interior pieces, etc which I am not too concerned about as I can source from Vintage Speedsters, etc. My question is any major red flags I need to look out for? Car has been in a garage for 10 years while owner wrestled with his inability to finish project. Also, how good are my prospects for adding a umbrella style (orig style) e brake rather than use the VW setup . . anyone familair with this? I am interested in creating visually a near clone of an original car. Thanks again, such a great site! Oh, I am still up for trading a very straight and correct 1984 Mercedes 380 sl convertible for a nice speedster, thanks!

James,
I've Been there many times with various speedster builds.
Engine setting that long will need to be gone through and best to know what you have in the trans also. To rehab a chassis less the shorting figure $1,200 plus in parts. Interior top etc $3,000.
Wheels and tires, body and paint is a large variable.
My latest project I purchased for $4,500 ...you don't find deals like that as it was a completed speedster.
I'm now almost done with the build with me doing most everything in my shop it came in under my budget at just under $16k including the purchase and shipping costs. ~Alan
Damn someone's been sneaking around my garage again - I resent comment on my inability to finish in 18 years too! Check to ensure doors and front/rear lids are there - they are available but costly to ship. Next is windshield and frame with posts - available but costly to ship. Everything else is easily fabricated or sourced elsewhere --- even some original parts like rear lights fit. Add the umbrella handle after its up and running --- it would be a good wintertime project. Run the engine in it while you build another. My in itial philosophy on mine was make it perfect 1st time around - its cahnged to get it on the road before gas is $5/gallon!
Thank you all! I just bought the car for 3,000 - all major stuff there -will need to source minor bits, most likely from vintage speedsters and this site. Any other great part sources? I want to make this car as clone like as I can with a few hidden mods here and there. This site is great and I know that I will receive some great advice. Anyone in the Napa/Sonoma area of California?
