Hi, with the spring thaw just around the corner and healthy tax refund in hand, my mind is turning to topless motoring. I see on eBay that a local place is selling a couple of Speedsters that are being built by Vintage Speedster. I didn't see any pricing on Vintage's website, but was wondering how much upcharge my local guys are getting. It would be kind of nice to pick it up locally, but I don't want to get smoked on the price; I am doing my homework. Thanks in advance.

Luke,
While not having experienced this personally, at least one person on the board purchased a Speedster on the east coast coast from a reseller in Mass. His experience was terrible and he may chime in. My personal belief is that it is best to buy directly from the builder based upon all the comments I have read.

John,
Thanks for your input. I think it might be nice to have someone local to help with little things that pop-up. I know it's not like buying a "new" car, but if they're making money selling it, what is the justification of the profit. I'm sold on the car already and I'll pay to have it shipped. Anybody else with input would be appreciated. Thanks,
Luke
Luke,

I would suggest you get a quote from VS on the car and the options you want. Then check out a good shipper for a trucking price to Wisconsin from LA. Compare the two to see what makes sense. I have a feeling it would be cheaper to have VS build it to your specs and color and then have it shipped. Guess it also depends how handy you are with the wrenchs. If not, then maybe the reseller would be for you. Have you checked to see if he has service facilities?

I guess a 3rd option is to check E Bay from week to week. Sometimes one might show up in the midwest.

Good luck from someone who used to pay Wisconsin real estate taxes, Bruce
Luke,

Congrats on the refund! We used Turbo Tax for years and always paid, started using Tax Cut last year and got a refund, starting the same process this year and it looks like even a better refund. Try Tax Cut Luke and you may move into a new 996 or whatever the newest Porsche is. Just kidding, I think.

Alan, we went so many years paying the gobbernut each April that a "Tax Refund" is not in my vocabulary. Skipped right over Lukes post because of that!

Re: St Louis ebay car

It sure looks like that car has roll-up windows, making it unique- with the WI assigned VIN plate. For an older car, it doesn't look half bad.

However, Bruce's 2001 Vintage in the classifed section is a SCREAMING deal at $15K. That car would go for about $25K new- If it were me, I'd buy the car, save 10 grand on the purchase price and about $1500 in freight. You can't really lose.

Buy the car, take a trailer out east, and don't look back...
