Stopped by a local sandwich shot on Sunday to pick up some dinner for my wife and I. It was raining a little. And there may have been a little salt still on the road. As I got out of my car a Mercedes GL pulled in right next to me. As I was walking into the shop the owner of the Mercedes shouted "nice 356" at me. As we entered the shop I thanked him. He then proceeded to scold me about driving my car on such a nasty day mentioning how expensive the parts are for these cars. I said "It's not real." He said, "Oh one of those fiberglass covered VW's." I said, "Well mine has a dedicated space frame, a 150hp Audi watercooled engine, 914 suspension, A/C and a 6 speaker stereo." "Oh." There was a little silence and I turned around in line to ask him about his Mercedes SUV and he was walking out the door back toward his car. Guess he lost his appetite.

Weird....
Although, most people, and that includes most Porsche PCA people, don't have a clue about us and still think that these cars are little putt-putt VW Beetles that someone dropped a fake body on. When I mention to the people in my local 356 club that I'm running a 2,110 T1 engine at about 145hp, I get this return look like, "Yup, this guys full of BS" and they move on to something else because they all know they have, at most, 75hp under the cover. These are the same guys who get all wistful when talking about someone's "highly modified" 356 engine that, after spending $8 Grand on mods, puts out "120hp".
Whoopee.
Nope, other people don't believe us..... until we leave them in the dust!
Phil:
I've been considering a customized licence plate that hints at what my car is. It still wouldn't prevent discussions such as the one you just had.
Some people understand; some don't. The ones who understand are the ones I bother talking to.

About a year ago I switch out IM badging to authentic badging. I've also gone from 8 hole wheel to period correct 10 hole wheels. I even have the period correct umbrella E brake. My car looks pretty correct other than the exhaust pipe placement, the steering wheel, shifter and of course the valance for the stereo and A/C. My license plate is IM356D. People probably think I'm trying to say I'M a 356D instead of Intermeccanica 356D. Think that if I ever do another one it will simply say OUTLAW and forget the Porsche badging. But who cares. I love my care just the way it is.
When people comment about my IM they usually say, "Nice car, what year is it?".
I tell them it's a 2010.
With a surprised look on their faces many say, "I didn't know they still make them".
"yes", I tell them, "they've moved the production to Vancouver, Canada.
99% of the population know absolutely NOTHING about our cars.
I'd put that at 99.76% minimum. And so what?? In addition to all else my car is or may be, it is a certified, dependable smile maker. Everywhere it goes. Almost to a man (or woman) the conversation starts: "What year is it?" So peculiar . . .
I do like that, Tom!
