I was dropping off some speedster bits in Palo Alto today and saw a black 2013 acura with a set of the classic black and yellow plates!  They looked good in person.

Got me to thinking -- what if I got a set for my daily driver and had them personalized to be the same sequence as my original black and yellow plates on my speedster.

Can't wait to see these on your car Chris!

TRP,

Did't you register your original yellow on black plates to your car?

If you did then you won't be able to order the legacy plates as personalized plates with the same number. The number on your original plates already come back to you.  If your original plates are just for show then, yes, you SHOULD be able to order the legacy plates as personalized plates in the configuration or your original plates.

The DMV has been pretty strict with personalized plates in that they know when people are trying to order personalized plates to match old black on yellow plates or yellow on black so they can use the older original plates on their cars and they won't allow it.

I'm not sure how the legacy plates are going to affect that.

Chris said his plate is a sequential (non-personalized) but it isn't in the same format as the original '63-'69 plates.  The original format was ABC123 his format is A12BCD.

MY Speedster is legally registered with  original 1967 black and yellow plates on it. They currently read: MHS 019

I wanted to order the legacy plates for my Acura wagon and get them personalized to read MHS019.

Are you saying that's not possible?

Since your Speedster is legally registered with your original black/yellow plates then your Acura wagon may not have the same number.  You could register the Acura as MHS020 or MHS018 provided no one else is currently using that sequence, regardless of the color plates. If they run MHS019 it'd come back to your 1967 Volkswagen.

The short answer is, "That is correct.".

For what it's worth, I tried ordering a personalized legacy plate that was three numbers followed by three letters and was told by DMV that wasn't allowed because the pattern resembled the old numbering patterns (which I thought were letters followed by numbers).

Their explanation was that this pattern conflicted with the year of manufacture program. In other words, regardless of whether that particular plate is already registered, ANY three numbers followed by three letters (or letters followed by numbers) couldn't be issued because that plate could be out there somewhere and someone might try to re-register it under the YOM program.

DMV has long had a web page for new vanity plates that checks if any sequence is already registered. I used that, and the plate I wanted is not currently registered. But they say since it MIGHT be requested in the future under the YOM program, I can't have it.

Weird, eh?

That is entirely consistent with what I know and understand regarding the DMV, the YOM, and the Legacy plate program.
