No, this is not a male fantasy, the title just turned out that way! I have the busted off square end of the speedo cable somewhat solidly stuffed inside the speedo instrument shaft. It's too short to grab with any tool (buried about 1/8 inch up the speedo drive shaft. The drive cable is hardened steel, and the inner drive shaft on the instrument seems to be brasss or some softer metal, so driling is out. The speedo itself is a 944 (or maybe a 924) varient with metric calibration. Anyway, has anyone tried to remove such a thing? It seems really solid in there. Oil has no effect to date.
The good news is that with metric instruments, I never really knew how fast I was going anyhow, so a big hole in the dash doesn't really detract that much. I wonder if it's legal to drive around without any speedo?

Thanks Alan, I had not thought of that. I actually have a set of screwdrivers that should work (they work on my eyeglasses, and they are pretty small screws). I did talk to a Foreign Speedo repair shop (one advantage of living in a large city). They were willing to take my money with a proviso that a new "stem shaft" may be needed. The more I thought about the price any part with a Porsche name on it, the less enthusiastic I became. I begain to visualize a big dollar sign covering the hole in my dash.
Thanks again guys.
Alan, YOU ARE 'DA MAN, BABY! I used your small screwdriver trick last night. One drop of oil, one small screwdriver, 3 1/2 minutes labor. The square end fell right out. Speedo is saved. Best of all - no cost to me. Now all I need is a new speedo cable. I wonder what cable connects a Euro 944 speedo to a '71 pan front wheel grease cap? A trip to Fibertech with the busted parts on Saturday should solve that problem. Then to enter the new info into my homemade "service" manual. Thanks again Alan, for the help.
