Ok, Henry copied me in on an email to the transport broker so my car will leave Vancouver end of next week.  He also said this weekend was the final test drive.  I guess this Sunday is drive your 356 day. He also gave me the mini your married and have kids lecture so I am extra careful with new power the car is making.  I'll give a full report in a few weeks.

Forget the gloves.  Marty and Jerry Rice use Stickum:

Marty,

This is good advice. Your family really needs you right now- two kids going into college, house and Florida condo payments, etc.

Better to just let me keep it safe for a while. I'll only take it out once a week or so, and put it away for you in the winter (I promise not to take the engine out). After you've cleared your responsibilities, you can come down and pick it up.

I will need some money to detail it every so often- I know how you like to keep things, and you know how bad the bugs are down here. I'll hold it for you for nothing, because that's the kind of friend I am.

Great news, Marty!

I am sure you are chomping at the bit to get your hands on the car - the wheel that is - and see if there really is a difference...

Henry, apologized for keeping me carless this summer but based on his comments it sounds like I am getting back a completely different car (just looks the same).

Awesome Marty!  Logistics are causing me to drive Natalie back to Bremen next Saturday for the winter (a little earlier than usual).  My Suby engine wait is beginning as yours is ending.  I won't have your hp (173), but also will be a little lighter.  I've asked Carey to get before & after weights to find out the difference.  Really excited for you....and me :-)

I do not have the weight exactly but I would expect around 2200lbs for my 170hp subie. Having gone from 2110 145hp type one powerband to a subie the engine is quite torquey and there is no hesitation as with carburators. The weight for an impreza 2008 model for example is around 3064 lbs posting 0-60 times in 9.5secs, wrx models in 4.8 secs, that said Marty will be flying by us but then we should be in the 6's a very respectable number and good power to weight ratio without the jump to light speed feeling at every touch of the throttle. If you want the jump, you could change the throttle to a switch as Marty did, hence the father and son discussion on speed required by the maker  Ray

"Just remember no traction control and no abs. 300 hp without electronics. Be careful."

That is exactly what driving was meant to be.

The majority of the USofA has gotten soft when it comes to their driving skills and that is why we still have so many accidents.  People are driving beyond their abilities because they think their car is going to get them out of trouble when trouble comes. We have blind spot monitoring, park assist, automatic braking, and probably a dozen other "new features" I've forgotten or didn't even know existed.  All of it is making drivers lazy. You don't have to check your mirrors, pay attention, or park your own car.

Sure, cars are safer than they used to be when it comes to crashing, but people have forgotten how to drive.  Take a simple poll and ask your friends how many of them can even parallel park anymore. Ask them which way to steer when the back of the car tries to pass the front of the car.  Ask if it matters if they have front wheel drive or rear wheel drive (It certainly does). Ask them how to stop safely if a tire blows on the front/rear of the car. Chances are they won't have a clue.

Marty that would be pretty cool.  A friend has an R8 and we ran hp to weight and he figures that a spider with 175 hp and 1300lbs can be as fast as his R8 but at quite  discount ...  I think IM are bit heavier but if you just compare the weigh of a type I and the weight of a subie & then the turbo and piping plus 30 feet of coolant you an approximate the weigh of the car.
An H6 3.0L subie 6 only weighs 75 lbs more than a 2.5L 4 and gives 250hp n/A it is barely bigger like 1 inch
There is A KGhia with one and you can see it moves maybe that is the next generation 356 power plant for subie guys

Marty, your car is going to just scream with that horsepower.

Are you sure you want your son to drive it?

Robert:

Your post is so accurate.  How many people actually understand what happens  when they put their foot on the brake pedal? Or any other 'mechanical' aspect of a car?

As long as their car has GPS, Bluetooth etc., and looks 'nice', that's all they need and understand to make a buying decision.

Parallel parking is not even part of a driving test anymore up here.  So sad.

The DMV took it off the California Driving Test also. Very sad.

I think it's hilarious but I've actually had people stop to watch me parallel park into some tight spots. On one try even.  I got out one time and a lady said, "Amazing." I laughed and asked why and she said, "That would have taken me all day or I would have given up." My response was simply, "I know, it's a lost art." and I walked off.

The worst thing is that when you stop, slightly past the parking space to allow you to back in properly, with your right hand signal on, some meathead is right on your back bumper.

Then they get pissed, blow their horn, and try to get around you.

I want to be the one to teach him how to handle and respect a powerful car.  A  Little at a time.

Robert, thanks for the update. I turned 66 this year, and my CDL, on "auto-renewal", came in the mail. I already started worrying about the "test" in 5 years, as I was due.  Not sure about passing the parallel park....

Now,  no worries mate, hope I live that long.

Bob and Marty, your cars are going to accelerate like a bat out of hell.

Both yours cars would give my old monster Miata a real run for its money.  It weighed somewhere around 2400 pounds and produced around 270 hp.

The latest V8 powered miatas, running Corvette engines, produce 415 hp and still weigh 2400 to 2500 pounds.
