How about THEM apples? Have no fear, though. For every cool save, there's a vomit comet:

Two grand and change gets you a 912-powered Kubelwagen -- without the .30-cal mount (sorry, Jimbo ... ):

Thirty-six grand gets you this Beckaru! Whose is it? We've seen 'em here before -- here's part of the pitch: "We have an attention to detail, customer service, and performance that is unmatched in the Speedster replica market. We are confident you'll find its our car or no car. The Beck Speedster ... ."
But it's not from Beck:

And, finally, a white fiberglass tonneau. It's kinda like the one I used to have:

Mine sat on the car pretty well, but this one's a slightly different design and I haven't got any connection to it. Here's what mine looked like on the car:

Man Cory...sorry for butting in; I know you were looking for TC...That 914 Baja and the 912 sure were vomit inducers big time!! The Thing looks kind of cool; judging by the small tailights it looks like one of those versions used by the German military in the '70's. And the Beckaru looks cool; I've never seen one before and I didn't know that Beck manufactured it either.
I love that fiberglass cover! Cory, do you still have that one? Or could you steer me in the direction of where to get one? There is no way I can buy one now or I'd buy that one. I have really pushed my luck with my wife as it is. I'll have to wait until spring maybe. And how's the fit? Yours looks like it fits pretty nicely and how do you fasten it? Thanks, Mickey
Ain't no butting in, Ricardo! It's just another one of my ebay-boredom-induced-go-there-for-ideas jaunts through other folks' rummage sales.

Mickey, sorry. That tonneau went to Indiana last year. I built my aluminum one when I decided to go with the pair of hoops in my frame. I couldn't make the fiberglass jobber work too well for what I wanted, so I fabbed mine from two Thunder Ranch headrests, eight million rivets and some sheet aluminum.
I never intended to put my top back on, so I engineered the support bolts out of the car, and the back seat went away at the same time.
If you wanted to, I could make you one like it for the cost of materials and some warm Guinness, but if it was a one-for-one of mine, you'd lose the use of your back seat (permanently) and you'd never be able to use your top again.
I'd need to be in front of your car for a couple days to make something different, if you want to go that route. I'll look to incorporate the existing structure of your car, and make it removable.
I just didn't care what happened to mine, as long as I got the overall function of the hinging body to work over my downriggers and hoops.

Todd, that's an odd little duck. I looked at the site for the replica Hummer, and I'm pretty sure I read that the chassis is intended to be 36 inches wide and have a 130-inch wheelbase.
Sounds familiar, and yet they're so cagy about what to make your donor chassis out of that you have to read between the lines to see that they suggest welding lightweight materials and using a small donor engine.
I guess they could just come out and say that the Kubelwagen already has a replica, and that this was the only thing left unreplicated, huh?
Cool idea, though. I like it. You could probably run it with an electric motor, or one of those hybrid engines from the Japanese.
Do you know anyone who's tried to build one?
