The Connecticut VW Association will be holding their annual show in Lebanon, CT, TOMORROW, starting at 9am and going until 3pm.  I went last year and it's a decent show - good food booths, decent vendor area and upwards of 200 cars there.  I'll be driving Pearl down, provided the weather forecast stays nice, and I expect to arrive sometime between 10:30am and 11am, depending on coffee stops.

Lebanon is east of Hartford, south of Willimantic and northwest of Norwich.  Looks like 15 minutes off of I395.

Well, I didn't get any other New Englanders to go (they're a notoriously aloof bunch, I guess) so I smoked on down there anyway.  Started with windy back roads, then 40 minutes of I395 and then another 15 minutes of windy back roads reminiscent of those roads we all took on the covered bridge tour at Carlisle.  Lots of old CT towns/villiages with lots of farms and lots of cows.

The show attracted 111 cars, mostly VW sedans and variations of buses (mostly Westfalia's) and a single, 2-door combi.  There were two Speedsters there - the other one was a highly modified red one, looked like an older CMC and had a 959 hard tonneau, along with a console and a whole bunch of other mods.  Believe it or not, I never met the owner.  Went over there several times but he was never around and he never stopped by when I was hanging around Pearl (although most of the time I was in the next stall - see below).  I actually got to park in a covered shed/building next to a guy with a 11.2 second VW sedan.  Massive turbo (up to 40 pounds boost) breathing life into a 2332(!!!), huge rear tires, roll bar, wicked big Tach, all that stuff.  He had a video on his phone of him launching off the line and the front wheels lifted up about 2 feet (!).  He won for best special interest.  He was from North Hartford (You nutmeggers will understand) and he and his friends were drinking something made with Paulo Viejo so I spent most of my time with them all, where I could practicarselo mi Espaneol.  Cool, slightly insane bunch, if you ask me, but we hit it off great.

Carl Berry couldn't make it - he had been pulling out "weeds" the day before, only to find that the weeds were Poison Ivy, so he's pumped up on steroids to get over it.  He should come down towards the end of the week and begin to lose a little facial mass.

All in all, it was a nice show.  Now we're all looking forward to the VolksVair show at the Hebert Candy Mansion in Shrewsbury, MA on August 4'th.

Be there, or be a typical, I-don't-wanna-get-involved New Englander.

I'll try to post my two pictures of the Lebanon show tomorrow, cuz it's late and Sophie and I are gonna go to bed.

Gordon, all I want to does cruise!  However I don't have a car right now. I should have it next season ans we should really try to set up some New England events. I'm so jealous of the west coast guys. I recentlymmet with Peter Venuti.... What a great guy. He took the time to show me his car and he is extremely knowledgable... I bet he'd be interested if we pulled some local events together,...but I am talking about NEXT YEAR!

Hey, Gordon. Not so much aloof as busy this time of year.  This is supposed to be our "retirement year" and we are getting our scat together so we can be more flexible next year. We hope to get a little more help from siblings with elder care so we can participate in life before we are in the elder care category ourselves.  Either way, I don't see us flogging this speedster up any highway for more than a few miles. She's lots of fun on the back roads but screaming at 65. It's geared pretty low and I think I could kill it if I tried. We went to the Bourne car show the other nite , about 100 miles round trip ,and my ass is still numb.

Al:

No problem and I feel your pain (literally - I started riding my road bicycle again this week after a break of 10-ish years.  After three days of only 20-mile days my ass is pretty sad.  A far cry from the days of bike-commuting.)  There's nothing coming up close to you with TYP356NE, unless you want to go to the East Coast Holiday in August up north of Boston.    Peter Venuti is working it as a volunteer and I would expect 500-600 Porsches there, easy.

Sue:  Couldn't get any of the NSRA crowd to go to Skip's, but they asked if I've ever done the show at Patriot Place in Foxboro so I might give that whirl next time.  I'm not thrilled about coming back on 495 after dark, as I've had problems out there after dark before.  Going in a group offers a little more warning/protection.  Have a good time and send pictures.

I've been looking around for some New England things to go to (along with re-doing a lot of stuff in the house) and may have some suggestions in a week or so.  Lots to do (shows, cruises, events, etc.).....just haven't had time to wade through them for some "most likely" choices.  Might have to suggest several (North, south east and west) as we, as a bunch, are pretty spread out.
