I took a spin in a friends beetle with a 2.5 subaru beetle this weekend, man was a smooth car, best was the car drove so nice, not a noise, creak, groan in sight.

Got home and thought, screw the 4 cam lookalike type 4 build, sell all the parts and go flat 4 scooby.

Until I weighed up the flywheel, adapter plate, clutch kit........

pass.......

I got mine back in 2008 from KEP. I paid $280 with the high performance clutch package. What are they getting for them now?

getting the parts in South Africa............about $1000. Excluding motor, rad, fans management etc.

You need to find some one that makes trips to US. Order parts and stage with one of us for pickup and transport back there in their luggage. A1 exhaust might be pushing a suitcase though.

I can say from experience if you are doing the work yourself the whole conversion is going to cost at least R25 000. (US$ 3500-00) It is amaizing how quickly all the little bits and pices all add up. I must have spent about R45 000 up to this point. School fees had to be paid! However if you consider the performance available you will easily spend this and more to get 70% (on a good day) of the scooby performance on a beetle or type 4 motor. The scooby should proove to be pretty reliable too.

When you add up all the extra bits and pieces that are needed, plus the weight of the subie engine, how much heavier is a Subie conversion?

30 to 40 pounds in the engine, another 50 pounds for the ancillary stuff (cooling, bracing, etc.)
