I'm not an expert on this, but I do have a sailboat with a few Sunbrella covers (sail cover, handrail covers, etc.).

On a boat, these covers are used mainly for UV protection (SUN brella, get it?). Hopefully, on a boat, whatever you're covering is already waterproof - it's sun damage you have to worry about more.

That said, Sunbrella, like any canvas, will keep most water out, if it's hung in a way that lets water drain off and not collect in a pool.

The companionway (doorway) on my boat leaks like a sieve, but if we throw the Sunbrella cover over it, the water sheets off, never gets to the leaky joints, and the boat stays dry below.

You guys, Sunbrella is NOT what you want near your car. Not for a top, not for a tonneau, not at all for a car. Period. I build custom interiors, and have for 27 years. Probably built more tops from scratch than most guys have had cars.  Sunbrella is for awnings, patio furniture, and boats. You are flat crazy if you are thinking about using it for Automotive!!! It has no body to it, it has NO sound insulation. Yes, it keeps water off, but it is NOT meant for a car top.  Now, with that said, please, do your car a favor, and just spend the money to have the RIGHT guy build a top from the RIGHT material and you won't regret it. Geeeeeezzzzzzzzz!!!!
