Jack,
I'll be going through St Louis, MO and Dayton, OH on my way to Carlisle. When the time comes I will post a route and see who wants to join us.

I have to admit, though, I will be cheating with my car on a trailer. But it would still be fun to drive together with other SOC folks. I am sure there will be many stories to exchange ... along with mechanical help if needed.

Happy Trails,
Dusty and the Right Seat Rev-Limiter Miss Sharon
Jack:

It might be a little early yet, (or maybe not) but I'm sure we'll find folks to join you. Leon is over in Gainsville, GA with his 550, so maybe he could join you, but you're maybe a bit too far West as a starting point to pick up the folks from South Carolina and Florida (they tend to head up I95).

Maybe John Hallstrand in Knoxville might not be too far out of the way for you, either.......

I'll be starting the bush beating for Carlisle in a few weeks (Usually right after the Holidays) but I'll certainly put you down for the mailing list and make sure you're in the loop.

Looking forward to seeing you there, and I'll spot you to breakfast at the Carlisle High School Marching Band food booth (it's a long story, but really good food).

It's OK, Dusty.....I trailer, too (probably for the same reasons)

Trailers remone me of all the Harley guys who trailered their bikes to rallys while us BMW drivers drove ours there! To each his own I know. I hope to drive mine both ways.

Thanks for the ideas and about breakfast---Great! Knoxville would work---just pick up I 81 N I guess. We have time and I would love to have others for the drive over---especially others who can wrench!

Let's see who elas might be available for the trip t Carlisle, particularly going accross on I- 40.----Jack
Jack, the southeastern caravan was small last year and I hope that it is larger in 2008. I drove across I-40 and picked up I-81 for a rendevous with Lane Anderson in Christiansburg, VA for an overnight stay. It was a fairly long drive for Lane and a relatively short one for me, but that was OK.

The next day, we continued up I-81 and did fifty or so miles on the Blue Ridge Parkway which was beautiful in the still misty morning air; I hope we can do some more of that next year....;-) I did miss the turn in Buchannan that cut about 20 something miles off that part of the planned route, but it was still pretty great.

We met up with Cory Drake in the Hoopty in Hagerstown, MD and had lunch leaving just a short afternoon run to Carlisle. I thought it was just great and I hope you can join us and our (hopefully) larger caravan.

ps. I'm not a great wrench but have had some experience with a VW-powered Speedster, problem diagnosis and repair. Make sure that you bring the tools you will need. Gordon has a great suggested list that I suspect he can provide again.....right?

Yes, Tis True.....Chris and I never leave home without our tools ;>)

Jack: Every year, I trailer my car to and from Carlisle. The original rationale was that if anyone in our caravan broke down, we could unload Pearl, load up the other car and make it to the destination, pressing on regardless.

The truth is, we've not yet had to do that for anyone with a 356/550 replica. In fact, the only major breakdown we've had with the Carlisle crowd was last year when Chris' "Mighty Power Stroke" Diesel pickup died when getting onto I81 to come home. For that, we got a tow off the road from Cory Drake with his "Hoopty"!!

Still, it is always prudent to carry along a bunch of tools and I have a rather extensive list that I will forward to you as a suggestion. Yes, it will all fit within a Speedster if you're clever, and will probably save you (or someone else) somewhere along the line.

We've still used the tools and trailer from time to time - the trailer became a make-shift "lift" at Carlisle last Spring to do some quick under-car adjustments on someone's car, and we're forever helping out with clutch adjustments and general repairs when needed. And, of course, the year before last we built Lane's car in a couple of days right at the show - even brought a shop air compressor and air tools for that one!!

Mine's the car with the palm tree and cresent moon (the state flag of South Carolina) on the license plate
Sounds great---and killer pics!!

I do hope I can join up with someone coming accross on I-40 as it's a VERY long way to E. TN (even in my Deville!)

I have a good assortment of tools thanks to a post Gordon put up. Now I'm working on spare parts to load up too.

Dist. Cap, Fan belt, a second Pertronics for the dist, a fuel pump, and so forth. Maybe there's already a thread of spare parts to carry.

Years ago I attended a BMw rally at Harrisburg and didn't give much thought to tools and spare parts. That bike was truly bulletproof. The trip will be nicer by far in my Speedie!

A friend of mine had a BMW R69-US for what seemed like forever. Rear bags, Earling front end, crash bars and road lights, it was the consumate cruiser. I swear he had over 300,000 miles on it when he "retired" it (Actually, HE was the one to retire, and his hips couldn't take the riding anymore).

All I ever remember seeing in his tool kit was a multi-tip screwdriver, a pair of pliers, a plug wrench and spare plug, a pair of points and some special wrench he made for his Bings. I don't think he ever used any of it.

So the topic is Carlisle '08. Being a realtive newbie (last year was my first visit, and I had no car then, so '08 will be my first visit w/ car.) Anyway, I heard some fast and loose talk last year about staging up some additional activities for the SOC attendees. One thing I heard was something like staging an assault on the sort-of local Harley-D factory, which is somewhere not too far away, I think. Or maybe some other sort of gathering, besides the "official" dinners and evening cruises. I am guessing anything else we would add in would have to be more toward the begining of the show, and hooked in with the varoius caravans (more than one??) that may form up coming in to town, like Thurs or Fri. So put your thinking caps on and come up w/ one or two ideas for some place/event we can go buzz, while we're all formed up.
I know I-40 well. Drove it from home to where it ends in California except for a hundred or so mile stretch on US 66 from Seligman, AZ to Needles CA and then all the way back on the "I". Gordon once suggested that I should take it east to where it ends in NC so I can truthfully say I've done I-40. Nice drive for a super slab, but it has some rough sections.
Hoss
ps. I did the drive home in three days and was home in time for happy hour the third day.
OK, I'll bite: where do I get one of those helmets?? And I'd especially want to hold a wrench (or a beer) while Cory's new Spyder is "assembled" this spring. Not sure if Bye-bye Hoopty has to happen first and how all the hopes and dreams being discussed here turn into reality by next spring, but I do not plan to park next to a Saab. A bigger problem would seem to be finding a way the keep Tom in the Green Coupe until Carlisle. I understand he is having some trouble w/ winter-worthiness (a quality he was counting on) and so is still fighting w/ JPS about this or that.
Bruce-----I am getting stoked about the Carlisle event! My wife, Alice wants to ride with me too---how good is that??

I don't relish driving it alone for breakdown reasons. I hope that at least a couple of Speedie drivers will be coming accross I 40 so I can join up at Little Rock.

Alternately, some folks coming up I 30 from Texas would also work.

Where are y'all??

Seems that a short outline of dates nad events should be put up on this site. Getting too cold to drive around here so let's talk about Carlisle---YEAH!!---Jack
Jack, I have a whole lot of tools, and I carry most of them with me for little situations other people seem to have from time to time.
You have my word on it; no matter if I'm driving my Golf or a Cushman golf cart, I'll mount the recovery mission myself to come fix your car if need be.

For the rest of youze hooligans (Yup, that's you and the Lovely Miss Sharon, Dusty) coming from the midwest and/or Rockies, my folks are in a suburb of St. Louis. They're really easy to get to, and they're great at hosting out-of-towners.
They'd be delighted to put anyone making the trek up for the night. Loads of places to sleep -- and they'll probably turn their cars out for the night so the Speedies can sleep indoors.
Just don't let Mom drive ... and watch out for this guy!
