A couple of reasons.
After installing the recommende size, the car ran terribly. Backfiring, through the carbs and through the exhaust. I researched various reccommendations on this site and in the Weber carb manual. I supposedly had installed the correct combination. My gas mileage was about 6 mpg.
After checking with various dealers, they advised letting the shop do it, or buying a number of different sizes and doing it myself. Either way was inconvenient and costly.
I have a small lathe and milling machine. I looked at the jets and decided to make my own. I started with the smallest size I thought might work. They were to small so I simply redrilled the jet slightly larger. The next size worked perfectly. Total time involved was about three hours and I had the pride of doing it myself.
And...
Use a air/fuel ratio guage to establish how rich or lean the motor is running. Then again to monitor changes.
I kept going richer on my set up before I got a guage, only to find out that it was way too rich already. I'm running smaller main jets from where it started and it's still a little rich. Runs good and gets 28+ MPG on road trips. (2110 dual dells)

Thanks for the thoughts. The Webers are brand new and stock. The heads are from G. Berg being fully ported and polished. I personally ported and polished the Big Max intake mainfolds so they exactly matched the openings in the heads. The muffler system is the full package from Tiger at AI. The car still ran lousy without any noticable change. I did visually check all of the jets and float levels and found no anomalties. Please remember that the car only has 2500 KM on it during which miles, I did just about everything to get it to run smoothly. I must have tried different tune ups some ten times, without any apparent changes in the the poor running, backfiring, rough idling. and very poor mileage. With the jet change, all of thses problems have disappeared. Being a hands on type, I intend to attempt to continually refine its running with the various gauges; but, my first priority was to get an acceptable level of running without being embarassed by onlookers.

I will be glad to make a set of jets for you-free. Please send me one of your present jets to obtain the exact dimensions and I need to know what size opening you want. My work address is 100 SE 12th Street, Ft. lauderdale, FL 33316
