Thanks to Danny, Gordon and drclock for advice which solved my carb linkage problem.  I was having the drivers side carb fail to return to idle 90% of the time.  This caused the carbs to be out of synch at idle and I was getting popping sand some backfiring.

I was having binding in my linkage that caused the trouble and was surprised to see the amount of wear the balls that ride on a spring inside the end of the hex bar.  The wear you see was after only about 20,000 miles on this linkage.

I hope the picture is clear enpough to show that half the metal is worn off on the left one---the one on the right is how a new one looks.

In replacing these parts I also saw that the Heim joints were stiff and not able to swivel as new ones do.  This stiffness led to the overall binding of the linkage.  Also to my surpriose, the spring that goes inside the hex bar ends was totally missing on the passenger side!  I am still wondering why that was missing but I have an idea.

New balls and heims gave me a linkage that is smooth as butter with both carbs closing solidly 100% of the time---no out of synch condx and a happy owner.  If your linkage is sluggish take Danny's Alan's and Gordon's advice and look for worn components including stiff Heims.

You guys crack me up!

As you know, Gordon, I went with a new C.B. Performance linkage, plus I had a new tab for the drivers side carb fabricated from steel in a better shape rather than the aluminum tab which was deforming, to take the left end of the hex bar and now it's almost straight accross to avoid the binding you saw  in the pix I sent you.  It works incredibly well now.  I rarely get that great satisfaction from truly fixing and improving a system on my Speedster but this time I did.

Also, I took the easy way out rather than using the nice linkage improvement kit you sent me.  I will donate the kit at the Carlisle raffle next spring so it will go to good use.

And, the folks around here in Dogpatch already think I already have a Boston accent from working in NYC for 20 years!

Geez....If you feel that good about fab'ing up a solution to your Hex Bar problem, Wanna come up here and finish my seats?

I got tired of buying BBQ Propane so I moved the seat re-hab operation into my "Rolex Cave" where I can simply crank up the heat on the wall.  Besides, they're much easier to work with when the material is warm and can be stretched around the frames.

C'Mon UP!

Glad you got a working solution to your problem - sounds about perfect!

Here's my "Upholstery Shop" annex.  I should be finished with both seats later this week (Life keeps getting in the way...)

Yeah, that room's pretty neat.  Has mementos from a lifetime of not always doing the "right" thing and still living to tell about it......  Bunch of stuff from when I was a kid, all the way up to Carlisle stuff (Pictures and Danny's Jumbo Beer mugs) and a whole wall of Rolex pictures (it's a small wall).  It's the only room in this house that still looks "country" with the wainscoting and fireplace, but then, I grew up in a 1730's farmhouse so it feels right.

Now, all I have to do is finish those damn seats so I can get my Internet TV room back!!

Don't you love how I'm using an Italian Media Case under the TV as an impromptu workbench??
