We have started getting some last-minute questions about the Speedster Meet and Carlisle. For those of you heading to Carlisle there is alot of information on the Carlisle wesbite: www.carsatcarlisle.com/schedule/import/index.asp
They also have directions posted at: www.carsatcarlisle.com/getting_to_carlisle.asp Take a look and see if it answers all of your questions, page around and you will probably find everything you need to know. There is alot of info on the Speedsters East website: SpeedstersEast.home.att.net

It would be difficult for me to cover everything that is going on next weekend (May 21-23 in case you forgot). I'll list below what's going on but it's brief and not guaranteed to catch everything:

Almost 50 Speedsters have registered; washdown area on the left after you register and enter gate 3; seminars will be presented by Henry Reisner (Intermeccanica - "The History of the Speedster Replica and Intermeccanica") and John Steele (JPS Motorsports - "Tips & Tricks for the Speedster DIY Home Builder"); three Speedster manufacturers will be displaying their wares (maybe more?) including the two just mentioned and Special Edition, Inc (Beck Speedster); Alan Merklin will talk about "Alternate Heat" at the hospitality tent; many other seminars (mostly on Saturday but some of Friday) on welding, wiring, other replicas, Kit Car magazine, "How to Buy and Sell Kit Cars", etc.; Brian Hawthornthwaite's car displayed all weekend in the indoor invitational exhibition; Speedster hospitality tent on the show field; Speedster items raffled Saturday afternoon at the hospitality tent; group photo session Saturday afternoon; host hotel at the Carlisle Ramada; Carlisle country cruise Saturday evening (but you might be late for dinner); Saturday evening dinner hosted by the NJRC; go-kart & slick track races/batting cages/mini-golf after dinner; Sunday morning worship service; "Meet the Manufacturers" Sunday afternoon at the hospitality tent; import swap meet; many non-Speedster replica vendors displaying their latest vehices and products; car corral (replicas for sale); on-site dyno (costs a few bucks); drawing for a cherry 1963 Beetle Sunday afternoon; a Speedsterowners.com gathering or two; the Steel Yard - a large teeter-totter that cars are driven onto to see who can balance on it within a set timeframe; SCCA driver training and autocross on the 1/4-mile, on-site road course; get togethers at the hotel in the evening; a great mix of imported "original" marques both vintage and late model British, European and Asian vehicles, etc.

Register at gate 3 (see Carlisle site for directions), you'll get a schedule and other things when you register, the first 1300 arrivals get a goody bag and dash plaque. Stop by the Speedsters hospitality tent - you won't miss us - and we'll have a schedule posted.

Still have questions? POst them below or send me or Alan Merklin an e-mail.

Bob,

There will be quite a few female right-seaters (including my wife) and a couple of them are already thinking about what they can do to get a break from the "car stuff". I'm not sure what they'll decide to do but they'll be looking to get together. In the past my wife sometimes sat in the grandstand and read/watched the people. If they get tired of hanging around the tent we have access to one of the buildings for some cards, games and socializing. If they can get access to a car or van (something with more than two seats) they may do some local shopping or sight-seeing.
Jerome, hopefully, now that you have said it, it won't happen. Yea, right! I looked at the long range forecast also, and it does not look like it will be as nice as what our left coast brothers and sisters experienced. One of my acquaintances suggested that the event should be held a month later for better odds of having good weather. Perhaps we should campaign for this while we are there, or at least find out how to suggest it if the idea truly has merit. Of course it would probably also be hotter.

Bruce, I looked at the directions for people coming from the south on I-81 and tried to match the text with the map. The exit you are supposed to get off is not shown, and I don't see any of the street names mentioned on the map either. It is probably not a big deal, since I suspect that the most important instruction is to follow the red and white signs to the event. I'm not gonna get lost, am I?

Carlisle Area Local directions:

To the Ramada Inn:

From the North: Rt. 81 South, get off exit #52, as soon as you come down the ramp the Ramada Inn is on your right.

From the South: Rt. 81 North, get off exit #51 onto Rt 11 south as soon as you come down the ramp the Ramada Inn is on your right.

From the Pa. Tpk: From the West or East... Get off at exit 226, go through the toll plaza and bear Left onto Rt. 11 North for one mile, The Ramada Inn will be on your Left.

*** Ask at desk to access trailer parking area across the highway at another hotel parking area. I keep two loop ended green vinyl coated cables and a high quality lock (WalMart)that I secure my trailer with anywhere I go, just to feel a bit secure. be sure to go through the trailer wheels and to the frame.

To the Carlisle Fairgrounds from the Hotel: Right out of the Ramada Inn onto Rt. 11 South, pass under the Pa. Tpk. continue 1-1/2 miles, at the light, there will be a Hess Gas Station, make that right
( Clay St.)and continue to gate # 3 on your right for registration.

To the Carlisle Faigrounds from the Pa.Tpk: From the West or East get off at exit 226, go through the toll plaza and bear Right onto Rt 11 South passing back under the Pa. Tpk. continue 1-1/2 miles, at the light ( Clay St.) there will be a Hess Gas Station, make that right and continue to gate # 3 on your right for registration.

To Sunnyside Dinner: Right out of the Ramada Inn onto Rt 11 South passing under the Pa.Tpk. continue 1 mile. Sunnyside is on your right. (Hess gas Station you went too far) Limited parking, we usually just park in the neighborhood streets. It's Good safe area.

Upon entering, mention your reservations under the N.J. Replicar Club / Speedsterowners.com.

Post dinner Go Cart Activities: Left out of Sunnyside onto Rt 11 North, passing under the Pa. Tpk. At the light at Middlesex Rd. make a right turn and continue 1/4 mile to the Sports Emporium on your left.

Just a note to let all know that, Rt. 11 is a very heavily traveled truck route with four large truck stops within one mile , be sure to use a bit of caution as .........most of them are lost too! Carlisle Productions a has a zero tolerance for alcoholic beverages and burn outs.

Have a safe and enjoyable trip out to Carlisle ! ~ Alan M.

Bruce, I hope you have a wide angle lens. If a large percentage of the cars show up, it's going to be a big group of cars to capture in one frame. One of the nice features of the left coast gathering, while incomplete, was individual pictures of owners and their cars. That was so cool, especially the shot of Theron and Jim Bob with totally hysterical captions.

Some people have asked about contacting others driving from near their location to Carlisle. Later this morning an e-mail with names, locations and e-mail addresses is going out to all 51 people who notified me that they are registered. This list will enable you to contact people nearby or along your route to discuss possible hook-ups. Don't forget the caravans coming from the northwest (Jerome Smith) and the northeast (Gordon Nichols), they still have room for more!
