My regional air carrier is currently having a sale, so I'm making all my reservations at once. Since I need to fly 5000 miles, then drive 2500 miles, I will win the "longest distance between brain cells" award.

Yep. Well, it's actually a bit of hyperbole as well. I already make the 5000 mile trip to California to visit our kids/grandkids twice a year. But, the drive is just to put faces on peeps. BTW, Alan's "contract" with Marriott is solid. They show no rooms available. I'll wait until he releases the rooms in Jan.
How about CO in early June. Still not to hot for the drive and Aspen/Snowmass is awesome. Plus lot's of driving options. I used to have Sales Meetings there in the off season and rates were great. Of course our cars have to run at 11K.

I'm the poster boy for the saying: be careful what you wish for. My wife and I wanted the chance to work with our kids in a business. At the time, we lived on Kauai, and our kids owned a dive company there that we helped them with. We sold our interests on Kauai, bought land in Fiji, built a small resort and dive shop that our daughter runs. We've been here 14 years now, working about 100 hours/week. I turned 70 a few months ago, and need to slow down, spend a little more time in the States with our son and grand kids. I know, I know, poor me, having to live in Fiji, what a whiner!
Working with our daughter has been a great blessing and experience for my wife and I. Working in a developing country has been extremely challenging. That's the best way I can express it on public media. If we talk face-to-face, my language may be more colorful.

i went to fiji 8 years ago to castaway island, just like gilligans island,,just beautiful island, sand, buru(house?) right on beach.. could roll out of bed and be in ocean, all inclusive, small island u get to on this big trimaran, gorgeous place, self sufficient, made their own H2o from reverse osmosis,Fiji Bitter Beer is KILLER,,kinda pricey but u only live once...i belive the greeting is BULU for hello...hope to get back..

You ought to write a memoir. I'm not jesting. After 4 plus years reading what you've posted on here I am pretty sure there are some great stories you could tell.
I also can relate to opening a tourism business in another country. We built a Home, a Dive Shop and a Restaurant in Loreto, Baja Mexico. Hats off to you Jim!!
Question....Do you keep your Speedster here in California? If so, it makes sense because my recollection of paved roads in Fiji was limited. Beautiful driving though!

You guys are jumping early...having dreams of warm weather, breezy nights, cold beer...?
Perhaps a bit early...but now I don't need to worry about forgetting to make a reservation...which was a likely outcome had I waited.
Not so much jumping early as just guaranteeing I won't have to attend Carlisle while staying at an alternative hotel. Much goes on in the parking lot, up and down the halls, the party room and even more on the patio later in the evenings.
How well I know...it's a great time.
Guess I'd better book early too.
