I just dyed my 10year old carpet with Rit dye and a spray bottle. It was sun bleached and water stained so it was either replace it or try dyeing it.  It was a dark charcoal (I think) so black was the only color to cover it.  I just sprayed it on and rubbed it in with a rag to smooth it out.  Looks really good and dried good and doesn't wipe off.  With a wet hand some did come off so my question is how should I try to set it?  I was thinking of scotchguard. Any one done this before?

It only cost about $6.00 so I'm not out a lot if it doesn't last.  I will just have to take it up to Kirk and have them put in a new one.  Sooner or later I will do that anyway.

I've dyed carpets, leather, vinyl, and fabric interiors.  I've never "set" the carpet dye.  I cleaned the carpets first, dried thoroughly, put on the dye and let that dry thoroughly.  Once the dye is completely dry (wow, it's weird just to type that), it seems to set with no further actions.

I also had the carpet in a house I lived in dyed professionally.  I watched him do the work.  Nothing was done to "set" that.  Just let it dry.

Hope that helps.
