I know that there are a few threads that address this issue, but I couldn’t find one that I could add to that addressed the issue definitively, so I’m starting a new one. If I’m wrong for doing this, I apologize.

This is my solution to preventing the carpet wear in the foot/pedal area.

With only 700 miles on my car, I was noticing carpet wear in the footwell of my brand new car. First and foremost, I didn’t want to screw/glue/Velcro any material into the subframe or pan of my new Vintage Motorcar built speedster. I figured that a plastic material that was molded to the shape of the areas in need of protection but held down by the weight of my Coco mats (which most owners use and are very heavy in weight).

Material: Kydex. Black (it comes in a wide variety of colors, so matching your carpet should be no problem). Purchased three pieces .093” x 12” x 24”

This size is perfect for the side pieces, but is too small for the tunnel near the gas pedal for I feel it needs to extend all the way to the foot wall for it to look finished ( by the photos you can see that this is a work in progress, and larger material is on order. Better pictures of the tunnel piece are to come.)

Kydex is a moldable material that is manipulated easily with a heat gun (great thing about this material is if you make a mistake, you can re heat it and start over). I made cardboard/poster board patterns of the areas needing protection, and made basic preliminary folds to the material that I wanted. More finely needed manipulation of the material around areas was done by carefully to avoid the possibility of melting the carpet (used cardboard and tin foil as protection from the heat gun).

I’m super happy with the results. If any members have questions, please feel free to comment.

Interesting. I’ve noticed that the German square weave carpet in my car seems to be wearing quickly where my shoes make frequent rubbing contact.  I might consider this.  And it would be easy to remove whenever you wish to ‘show’ your car, or someday sell it.  Just be sure things are super secure so you don’t get get your feet tangled while driving.

I’d like to hear what you think after driving for a while.

I anchor my carpets just ahead of the seat glides - basically, 1/4"X 20 bolts with the heads ground into hooks that bolt through the floor, although if you have a cushion under your carpet you might get away with those carpet anchors from Autozone that screw into the cushion.

Neat installation.

The 'Home Depot square weave' on my VS started wearing pretty early on, notably on the door threshold.

We got some vinyl fabric that was a close match to the seats at my wife's fabric store. She hemmed it and I glued some velcro on the back to keep it stuck. Five years later, it looks like this. Since it's vinyl, it wipes clean with a wet sponge. The rest of the carpet, in low abrasion areas, still looks surprisingly good.
