Brian,

The best plan would be to talk with Vintage or JPS and price sending them your existing engine lid and them retro fitting your lid with Carrera louvers. This way there is no doubt about the lid re-fitting your car, as well as your existing engine grill. Apparently depending on the year of manufacture the lid & grill openings can vary.

I did this with JPS, as well as had them repaint the lid. All priced reasonable, plus the paint work was terrific.

George mentioned medal louvered versus fiberglass louvers. He mentioned some time ago about a potential problem with dissimilar materials thus recommended staying with fiberglass louvers. I mentioned this to John Steel, he assured me with JPS using metal louvers wouldn't be a problem so I went with him and his reputation.
The car is an 84 IM with 911 engine. The existing lid has been butchered by a previous owner....the drip tray has been cutoff together with the mounting for the hinges. Hence my desire to get a new lid.

IM does have one but the lid is fiberglass and the louvers just don't look right...plus its close to $1,500 CND.

Shipping down my existing lid does not solve the problems mentioned above plus it would cost me $200 each way because I live so far north.

Twice I have seen carrera "skins" for sale on Ebay and once someone had a complete mold...should have bitten then. I'd really like to get a metal lid and have the louvers put in...one went on Ebay last night for $455.

Brian,

My lid had fire damage. John Steel seperated the top and bottom faces and added a new inner face to the old outer layer. Perhaps your lid can be salvaged. Don't hold me to this, but I *believe* he fixed the fire damage, added louvers, primed and painted for around $400, which included postage to me on the East coast. I would have gone with new lid too but was concerned about it fitting my lid opening, ditto resisting engine grille fitment. Email John Steel for his suggestion. (You sure there isn't cheaper shipping from the frozen north to sunny SoCal?)
Bonding metal louvered sections into fibreglass can be a probelm due to dissimilar coefficients of expansion, e.g., steel expands/contracts more than cured fibreglass resins, and aluminum expands/contracts more than steel for any given temperature change.

Depending on temperature variations delamination (separation) can occur. Probably the best resin to use for a glass/steel bond would be epoxy (as opposed to polyester or vinylester resins).
Hey Brian,

If you follow Erik's advise it sounds like you'll come up with a winner.

I spent more than that ($400) buying a new lid from Vintage only to find it did not fit my Vintage and the paint job was....let'see, how can I put this delicatley, F _ _ _ _ _ _ - UP!

I paid $475+ shipping for the Carrera decklid and another $250 to correct, strip and have a decent paint job put on it.

I would think that with some minor repairs to your existing lid, you could get a good carrera lid by JPS...Are you going after the look of the lid on that 356 coupe posted recently?

George,

I believe you. Last year I told John about these same concerns. He told me if I had a problem in the future he would make it right, on him. He reassured me there are tens of thousands of cars with fiberglass fender flares/extensions and fiberglass hood scoops thus he didn't feel it would be a problem, but who knows. John told me Vintage uses fiberglass louvers.

Brian, don't quote me on this but I think John quoted me about the same for a new lid painted as he charged me to refurbish mine, retro fit louvers and finish paint. He told me how my local body guy could trim his new lid to fit if needed, but I didn't want to gamble my old grill would fit it, if not that would have been another expense for a new grill. I can't remember exactly how much it cost, but I am certain it was between 400 or maybe 450 bucks, but I believe it was closer to the low end.
Ended up buying a metal lid off Ebay. When it arrives I'll see if I can get it to fit. Not much money so I figured worth a try. If nothing else I may just cut out the tray and bracket attachment points as my lid is missing those.

I wanted the carrera lid partly for looks but mostly for cooling. Since I fitted a Mocal oil thermostat running through braided stainless lines to a Maxda RX7 cooler up front, cooling no longer seems to be a problem.
