Someone posted a question about engine lid louvers.

Vintage, JPS & IM can retro fit Carrera louvers into your existing engine lid. It is not a difficult process for them nor is the price out of reach. Give them a call.

Beside looking very cool, IMO, one would assume they also are functional by adding cooler outside air directly above the carbs. While it may be debateable what if any real gain in performance you would receive, still, you have to figure Porsche had a purpose, not even factoring in the grin on your face every time you look at the louvers on your car. Now if only we could get JPS to develop the GT airboxes that Porsche had attached beneath the louvers...

Wait a minute! What was I thinking here? These louvers don't look cool! Fact is they suck, don't add them to your car! You will be sorry if you do. (Man, next thing you know swinging dick is going to want them on their cars...)

I just may try figuring out something re GT air box shrouds when I start detailing the car. Not going for an exact reproduction but facimile close enough. Porsche had good engineering behind their reasoning, no doubt.

I bet twin Webers would really HOWL if all the intake noise in directed up and out of the car via the louvers... Excuse me while I go change my underwear :>
Regarding howling, growling and louvres... The pictures I have seen of the underlid accompaniment (sp?) are way cool on those old Carreras... here's my question: I asked the mechanic about running with just the velocity staxxx, no air cleaners (partly performance desires, mostly additional noise levels desired) and was told that beyond the crap that might get into the system without air filters, there is a fire danger...
Any thoughts?

Paul, without air filters the ingested crud may be a real problem, depending on where you live. If there tends to be a lot of dust, dirt, or sand in the air I would advise you to keep the air filters on.

If the air is reasonably clean I wouldn't be concerned about running without them or a fire hazard - as long as your carburetors are jetted properly you shouldn't get backfires through them (which could ignite any "stand-off" mixture).

Even if there was a backfire through a carb the ensuing result would probably be sucked back into the engine as it continued to run. This doesn't mean that there can't be a fire, but I would think the possibility is so slight that it's a non-issue.
