What are the correct sizes for the gold 'Carrera' scripts that go on our cars?

I want to replace the '1600 Super' with 'Carrera' out back, but of course want to make sure that the sizing is accurate.  I think there's a bigger one and a smaller one, and I think the smaller size is the one that goes on the rear (and the bigger ones are for fenders), correct?

(and yes, I saw one for sale in the 'classifieds' sections......but Troy's got a quicker trigger-finger than I!)

Ashique - The larger size is the one that goes under the Speedster logo in the back. The smaller script ones would go under the speedster script on the side fenders. Having said this, I have seen several versions of this placement but I was at the Dana Point 356 Porsche Concourse last weekend and and took pictures of a real Carrera with the large one on the back and small ones on the fenders. Hope this helps and this is how I am placing mine on my 56 Carrera Speedster replica.

Well either ways, both you and I will have the larger size on the back.  So if it's incorrect........at least I won't be the only one! LOL!!

Thank you Dutch!

You and I will be golden so no worries! I should be getting my smaller script ones any day now (ordered from Stoddard). In case you are interested, there is a company in Southern Ca called Fibersteel that is working on a 356 Carrera Style Motor for both real 356 Carrera's as well as for our VW replica based cards. I also saw them at the 356 Concourse Sunday, they make hardtops and other body parts as well.

And great info on FiberSteel, I think my next major purchase will be the half-hardtop (forget what it's called)

I am not sure that Stoddard is any better quality than Sierra Madre (check it first) but they are a bit more like $60 if I remember correctly. They look the same to me and I probably would have bought them from SM had I know they had them. Re: "half hardtop" I am not sure what that is. If you look at my avatar it shows my real 356 '61 1600 Super I used to own many years back with the Metal Hard Top built by Karmann. It included a glass rear window. If you want one builr to for your car you would have to have it custom made for your car since all the replica bodies are a bit different from vendor to vendor. You just have to tell them who built your car and they may have to do measurements to make sure it is a good fit. They are not inexpensive but check out their site at fibersteel.com

I have seen many different placements, but according to the 356 Carrera book, GS cars have no Speedster badge on the side, instead it was the large Carrera in place of the Speedster badge, and the small Carrera went under the Porsche in the rear.  GT cars had no fender emblems at all, some got a rear mounted small Carrera underneath Porsche, while others got engine designations under the rear Porsche emblem.

They do address (briefly) the Speedster side emblem with a small Carrera under it, and they refer to it as both "unique" and of "unknown origin".

By half-hardtop, I mean the top with the humps behind the driver/passengers' heads - like the Hollywood tops.  Like the newer.....918's, is it?

Maybe a full hardtop later down the road, I like the look...!

Very interesting.

Having a 'Carrera' underneath the 'Speedster' on the fenders is too much (for me), so that's okay.

The car isn't sporting an Outlaw look so I'll probably keep the fenders the way they are, and go with the small one underneath the 'Porsche' out back.

I'll have to peruse the picture galleries here for more inspiration

I ordered the large "Carrera" from Stoddard, it was too big, returned it and ordered the small, it was perfect even lining up with the former 1600 Super holes. I believe the large is more appropriate for the Carrera 2.

My research of my personal library and hundreds of pictures dating back to the sixties indicates only a rear badge. I agree with Carey, I have seen very few with both Speedster and Carrera on the fenders.

Very nice Dutch.  That would have to be one of the earlier Carreras, probably a T1 '57.

LOVE the Rudges too!

Just FYI, the rear Carrera script on that car is also a small one.  The large one would be bigger than the Porsche script.  This is only the 2nd (maybe 3rd) Carrera I've seen with the Speedster badge and a Carrera badge under it.  I think Porsche made changes weekly back in the 50's... makes "authentic" very hard to pinpoint.

I do believe that is a '57, very nicely sorted out too! Cool knock-off spiners on the wheeels. And yes I agree with the frequent changes Porsche made in the beginning of manufacturing the various models of the Carrera. I have seen a number of Variants of the placement and size of the Carrera script. I recently bought from ebay a hard to find book on the 356 Carrera development and numerous models like the GT, GS, with 5 or 6 louvers on the engine decklids, and of course engine modifications as well. I just think that this was one of the most unique of all the Porsche lines, and it continued to be popular and grew exponentially more in value from its' early inception to current day.

You are correct...as I looked on my own car's rear script(DUH), it is the small Carrera script right below the larger PORSCHE script. Yeah those Rudge knock offs looked pretty nice!
