? I've seen some that come back from being cleaned (at a machine shop) that have a yellow tinge to them (vice silver). Is that what you mean? I'm assuming its from the method or chemical solution used to clean it. From the Gene Berg VW site: Note: All VW cases are "pickled" when new. Pickling is a preservative that leaves the case colored. This color varies from gold to green. It is not to be removed as it is meant to protect the magnesium from corrosion.
Angus,

If it's just spray paint, and it wasn't done by the PO, it could be that it's a race prepped case. There's a company that sells/sold engines in various states of tune, gold being the top, green being the bottom, and one or two other colors denoting the middle level(s).

Maybe you lucked out, maybe it's been tanked, maybe someone just liked a little "bling" . . .

Luck,

TC
Angus,

Here's the web page for the British arm of the company:
www.volkspares.co.uk/

They seem to have outlets in a lot of the former colonies, and another venue "BiG BOYZ TOYZ" that covers the remaining. I think . . .

I ALWAYS see their adverts in VOLKSWORLD, they help sponsor quite a few events in the UK, and they had a company sponsored GHIA that did well when it came to North America a while back.

Hope this is some help,

TC
