I called Pat Downs at CB Performance today to discuss a possible engine build with him. I described my desires- reliability, 100- 130 h/p, good torque, reliability, cool operation, and reliability. Did I mention I wanted the engine to be as reliable as a hammer. I

A single point in isolation is a reference point. Two points is a line. Three points is a trend. Trends don't lie.

Stan, I laboured over the same decisions. I wanted reliability and decent power. I went with the 2110 and the best engine components that I could afford. I kept the valves fairly small (40 x 35.5), went with an 86b cam, had a really good port job on the heads and went with a CD box and Mallory Unilite. I love the combo! Lots of low end torque, very good high end power, excellent driveability and decent gas mileage. With the reliablility, well, only time will tell.
Give us the details on your engine combo, went you finally decide. I know that Pat won't steer you wrong. For my next motor (in my next life) I'd love to order a big turbo motor from CB (so much for reliability).

Horsepower is an evil drug....I WANT MORE!
Thanks guys- but it was Pat who really impressed me. I've been around enough to know when someone is out for a quick buck, and when someone is in it for the long haul. Pat really seems to be listening to what I'm saying, and that's pretty rare in today's world. It's really a question of whether I can justify another wad of money on a car that has already eaten me alive.

Ron- what transaxle mods are you running? Did you do anything to beef it up? How are you controlling framehorn flex since you are also on a pan? I've been looking at the CSP brace that attaches to a heavy duty trans mount and ties the framehorns into the shock towers, and the shock towers together- but again... its another $300 and a long evening in the garage.

Also- anybody have a source and pricing on a limited slip differential?
I've known Pat for several years via phone and the web; went out to CB last November to shag parts while he was building my 2,387.

Nicest guy you could ever meet, and he knows more about type 1 engines than most VW engine builders. His engine work is meticulously correct; he has built two engines for me and they both run like Swiss watches.

He is busy like you wouldn't BELIEVE, so if you call him to discuss engines have your ducks in a row, and be considerate and keep it as short as possible.

I do have a unusal setup with the 3.67;1 final drive raito of my automatic tranny . That could make for some trouble chooseing engine spec,s

The T-4 would have been perfect as far as the torque. But it proved to be more trouble than its worth.

Pat's busy schedule is another reason I need to delay
I dont know, What I want? Or need ?in a larger engine. Let alone what would be the best combo for my application.
Or if anything can be done to increase torque of a T-1.

One thing is sure, Im not budging on the automatic. It's painfully ovious I will need it as father time is takeing a toll on my legs.

I gonna try the stock 1600cc spare engine, and see how it does.
Stan: I've got a 2,110 and I put in a "pro-street" transmission from Rancho Performance Transaxles (their ads are in "Hot VW's" and others). It's got the usual "super-Diff", Billett side covers, welded gears, and steel forks and I asked for stock gearing.

So far, the gearing isn't an issue, and they told me that it would be very happy with the 140 hp of the 2110. I like it!

Stan, my tranny mods are minor. Super diff and a few other heavy duty pieces. I'm only putting out 130-140 hp and I'm not a drag racer, so I kept the tranny close to stock. I did have a 'freeway flier' 4th installed, and I'm very happy with it. At 70 mph it revs at 3400 rpm., which is a very for cruising.

2330 is more engine than I think I need. Im not that good a driver. and as I aproch my 50s Im looking for low maintaince power, even a single progressive carb setup.

As a tech I work on german machnery 24/7 . When I get out of there, I want to be able hop in my D and go anywhere.

What would be a tame displacement? Would 2110 give you decent passing power?
There is that point of decreasing returns. At a certain point the extra gain in hp is less than the loss in durability. The question could be...what is that point? Unforunately, there are a lot of variables. Then again, there is always that one variable that must be included in any formula...the 'fun' factor! (more hp = more fun)
Ron
P.S. I looked up the word 'fun' in my Funk and Wagnalls (anyone old enough to have watched Laugh In will get this), and NO WHERE is there any mention of sex....of course, they don't mention HP either.
