CB Ultra HP 2332cc engine with big valve, big port heads. 165 HP

What's the word on this engine?

Anyone have any experience with it, in terms of reliability, ease of maintenance, driveability, etc.?

Friend of mine runs one..... Got about 20k mi. on it with only the "normal" problems. (dirty jets, pushrod tube leak, leaks a little oil at speeed.) He's happy with it, as not too much gets away from him..... ( Vintage Spyder: lightened to the max...1235lbs.)

I know that Kelly Frazer has a 2332, but I don't know if it's built up like you describe.

The only guys on here who do heavy miles are Dave Stroud in Canada, (eh?), Jack Crosby (but he has a T-IV), and Jim Ignazio (and his is, what? a 1,776?)

Nobody else seems to do enough miles to ever wondering about wearing the engine out - they typically sell the car with well under 20,000 on it and it's just about getting broken in.
When was the last time someone on here said, "Gee....I had to pull my engine for a rebuild because it was worn out." (?????)

I beg to differ, G-dawg. I have put ~30k miles on mine in 5 years. Not bad for a weekend driver, huh?

I got a engine from Chico performance and it came with a 136hp dyno sheet.
I am in the process of installing it and will report back soon.....

How much is CB Performance's 2332? $6,000?

I have 26K on my CB 2110. It's never even had a hick-up!

I've used a TON of them in Spyders, and other than the typical 44mm and 48mm Weber issues, they have been great.

You should get there by 2026 or so, given your present run rate.

I really wonder if decent replacement air cooled engine parts will even be available then, given the current rate of decent part supplier drop-out.

91 octane should also cost about $15 bucks a gallon by then, too.

BTW: I should get to 120,000 miles at my current run rate by 2037........If I haven't moved over to all electric by then.

Keith better budget at least 6K plus cooler. Roland Rascon also builds a nice engine. The one at the bottom of this link was in my old VS Widebody.

Check out CPR aka Chico. I got a motor with all new parts (no rebuilt rods/case,etc.)It came with forged crank/H-beam rods/CB ALUMINUM case,lightweight flywheel/Kennedy clutch/web-cam/crank-crank pulley-flywheel-clutch all bolted together and dynamically balanced,cnc ported heads,forged ratio rockers,it also included new Weber 44IDF's all jetted. The engine had the cam broken in on the dyno and a dyno which came out to 136 bhp,and 136tq. with 120ftlbs available at 2500 rpms! A very flat torque curve,and I requested "Carrera 130 hp motor,and I got 6 extra HP no charge,and this was at only 5500rpms,once broken in completely I will be able to rev to 6500 and probably a few more ponies. I will scan the dyno/build sheet and post it once I figure out how to post images here and not just jpg. links!
All that goodness was only $4600.00!!
He measures everything/cc's heads,etc.,does the rocker geometry the whole nine yards.
Anyone that hs bought a Chico motor has only good things to say,that is wy I wet with him,he has a great reputation.

I.ve been trying to come up with a idea for a bigger engine for my old Veepster dune buggy i need to finish that thing it is a 4 speed

Im thinking someting in the 140 hp zone its got some N/50s on the rear. gonna need a bigger engine.

I do have a Chico Performance 2332, Bob. It's the "chocolate motor"- short-rod torquer (200 hp). I'm running nickasil cylinders in mine, along with Dellortos instead of IDAs, and a 1-3/4" sidewinder instead of a merged header. It's a nice engine, but a bit highly strung for 99% of the folks here.

Seems tame enough to truck beauty queens around in a parade, Stan. :)

Thanks for all the replies related to my original question. I was seeking reassurance that this engine would last a good long time (if driven and maintained properly, of course), and that I would not be into an expensive rebuild too soon.

I think the beauty queen hauler was a couple cars back in the Galat string of Speedies. Stan claims that his current IM is the last and best of the lineage. I think the one with the queen on it is his old JPS.

OK, I wouldn't know but it'd be a shame if he's chosen to use an engine that prevents such a pleasant opportunity as trucking homecoming queens through town during a holiday parade. :)

My kids are all out of school now Ken, but I was asked right up until this year to drive in the homecoming parade (4 years after my youngest graduated). Apparently, nobody remembers me any more.

The 2332 did just fine when they did- crisp September afternoons are not the same as 100 deg summer days.

Call me, we'll form our own parade!
