Even though it is a slim height, 2 inch element filter and housing, I need something either a bit lower or if this isn't possible,
a way of moving it or another different type air cleaner to a different location in the engine bay.

The VW Karmann Ghias (and Thing) used an off set air cleaner. Perhaps that would work?
A stock single VW carb first with a small air cleaner, a Weber Progressive 2 bbl carb and air cleaner sits too high. It you are having clearance issues with a the stock set up it is generally caused by improper chassis shorting and the chassis is not perfectly level so the back tends to be up a couple of degrees or so. As Wolfgang's photo shows you can use that set up and a K & N cone filter on the end.
Edit: I guess I had a senior moment and didn't read " EFI " BTW anyone else do a mental "Roll Call" when exiting your vehicle " Keys, Cell Phone & List " ?
Pics would be helpful and wanted. I would like to see the EFI setup.

unable to send photos but was told there is a simple round insert that reduces the height enough for me to clear the engine cover.
