I read on Samba that there was a VW Transporter show today and decided it would be a nice trip to make as they enjoy seeing anything air cooled, so I called up fellow speedster owner Mark Lowe from here in the area and we decided to meet up and check things out. Turns out that there were 3 original 356's that decided to show as well and we garnered lots of attention from the crowd. Of course, Mark and I had the best looking cars based on condition, but the originals (56 Speedster, 63 Cabriolet, Unknown year Coupe in rough condition but beautiful) were just amazing. We talked with lots of people and I snapped a few horrible shots from my cell phone camera. Thought you might enjoy them.

By the way, has anyone come up with a device to shock peoples hands when they stick their fingers under the wheel well to see if its metal? Must have been 10 people do that to my car...

James -

I am jonesing for a VW crew-cab transporter, so I really enjoy those VW transporter shows.

As you already know, at any car show, just about EVERYBODY IS A FRIGGING EXPERT. Knowing this, I put a sign on my windshield that says '1957 Speedster Replica mfg by Vintage Speedster' (of course yours would say Intermeccanica). This essentially takes most of the grandstanding out of the 'so-called' experts who like to poster by feeling under the wheel well. Most don't even know WTF they're feeling for!

Another phenomena is how many people ogling your car will tell you that they either had an original or they knew someone who had one. If you kept a tally of these used-to-haves you'd think that Porsche musta made about 5 million Speedsters between 1956-1958.

The most fun part is the fact that lots of people will compliment you on the car. I'm sure you'll get many miles of enjoyment out of that sweet ride!

Peace - Out!
Sorry guys, I forgot my camera so I used my cell phone to snap these few pics of the 356's... its a horrible camera so I didn't actually go around and take any more of the transporters. My family used to have a white westfalia (sp?) with the pop up top bunk when I was a kid and my parents used to take 2 weeks off every summer and we travelled across america in it.. biggest ball of string visit kind of stuff... coast to coast. I would love to get one myself. Noticed a certain hippster attitude to most of the folks that drive them.. maybe I just didn't notice that my parents were really pot smokin beatnicks... lol..

Hey James,

It was good meeting you yesterday and seeing your Speedy! What a beautiful car! Yesterday when my wife and I were out running errands, we found ourselves up in Birkdale Village (off of I-77 exit 23). As it turns out, there is a car show there every 3rd saturday from 7pm to 9:30pm. Lastnight was the first one of the summer, and besides my car, there was mostly hopped up Subaru's. Needless to say, my car was definitely the center of attention! It had its picture taken many times - sometimes even with a hot babe or two! :-P You will definitely have to check this one out next month! June 16th is the next one I think. It was great just hanging out enjoying the beautiful evening. There was live music there too which was just added to the evening! It is free admission, and anyone that wants to pull their hot rod, classic, etc.. up onto the green area is welcome to. I look forward to the next one!
